The team materialized through the gate. Jack took one last look back and the swirling wormhole. It was waving back and forth as if saying, "So long old friend." He was sad to leave but knew his future was to be more fulfilled than gate travel.

"Welcome back, SG1. Debriefing in 0100 hours."

"Sir." Jack said nodding his head. The team unpacked, showered, and grabbed a bite to eat.

"Are you doing it now?" Sam asked.

"I plan on it. Figure Daniel and Teal'c better find out at the same time or they might get jealous of one another." They smiled at each other.

"Are you nervous?" She asked inquisitively.

"No. I know what's to come after today." They smiled at each other as they instinctive put their hands together and pushed one another away after they realized what they had done. Luckily, no one was watching and the hall was empty.

They entered the briefing room. Everyone was present but Jack and Sam. They went through their debriefing, obviously including their plankton research. Most importantly, Hammond was overly excited about the amount of Naquida the team found. Finally it got to the end of their time and Hammond dismissed everyone. Sam looked to Jack with worry in her eyes. She thought maybe he had backed out of the idea. He jumped from his seat.

"Sir. Daniel. Teal'c. Please sit down. I've got some news I need to..." he paused, "Share." He picked up a vanilla folder that sat in front of him and walked it over to Hammond who was now seated again.

"Coronial?" The General asked. He looked to Sam who was smiling and looking at her hands which were folded on her lap.

"My resignation, Sir. I made a big decision about my life. To be happy." He stopped his speech as he stood behind Carter. Neither looked at each other nor said anything. They just watched the others expressions.

"Jack! What the Hell do you think you're doing? Im not accepting this resignation!" Hammond stood up and threw the file across the table.

"Well, you better because I'm leaving." He grabbed his coat off the chair and headed for the door.

"We need you, Jack. I was going to wait to tell you in front of the SGC but since you have presented this.... I want you to run the SGC, Jack." Sam shot a look up at Jack who stopped in his tracks and turned around.

"What?" He screamed and leaned foreword.

"I turned in my resignation, Jack, I'm retiring and they told me to pick a predecessor. I want you."

"Sir, I'm not running the base. That's final. I'm not going to take your place." Jack said.

"Then you can continue to run SG1. I just wanted to offer it to you." Hammond said. He stood. "Dismissed". Everyone, eyes on Jack, walked out of the room. All except Sam.

"That didn't go as planned." She put her hand on his shoulder.

"I will have to figure something out. Obviously he's not going to take my resignation."

"Then maybe you need to think about taking his job offer. He doesn't leave for 6 weeks. You got time." Sam said.

"But I was looking foreword to retiring. For good this time. You know, fishing....fishing." He looked off into the distance, disappointment on his face.

For 5 weeks, Jack and Sam met on the days they had off to plan the wedding. They went on dates and watched movies together, but all they wanted was to be together without having to hide it.

After having the weekend off, they returned to base on Monday morning. Hammond told them they were going to be given a mission exploring a new planet with intelligent life. Daniel was the most excited. "You disembark in 30 minutes." Hammond commanded. The team went to gear up.
