"So, how are you going to break the news to Hammond." Sam asked as they walked, alone, back to the base camp.

"With my letter of resignation I've had typed for a week." He looked at her.

"You've had it written for a week?" She said, astonished that he was actually nervous about telling her.

"More like 6 but whose counting." He said.

"How serious are we looking to take this relationship?" Sam asked. Jack stopped walking.

"Sam, I'm quitting my job for you. In fact, let's just make it official now. Shall we?" He reached into his pocket and drew out a ring.

"Jack, what are you doing?" Sam sounded scared.

"Sam, I've known you for 6 years, and through those years it has taken every ounce of strength not to do what I just did to you last night, every day. Your smart, funny, kind, and you're really bad at hiding your emotions, but anyway," she chuckled, "But I want to spend the rest of my life with you Sam. I want you to be my wife." With that being said, he got down on one knee and held the concealed ring in the air.

"Jack!" Sam said again.

"I've carried this ring for 6 years, in my pocket everyday. Just knowing it was there made me content, at least I thought it did. I want you, Sam. Marry me?" She put her hand over her mouth. Tears streamed down her cheeks like rain on a window. She removed her hand as a smiled creeped across her face. She mumbled.

"Yes."

"What's that? I need to hear you louder." He tiled his ear toward her to speak up.

"I'll marry you Jack. I love you!" He put the ring on her finger as she cried. She grabbed him and held him close.

"I was hoping you'd say that."

He let her go and dried her tears. "We better get going. Everyone's probably wondering where we are," he smiled, "if anyone asks, you found a wonderful new species of plankton in the water to study and I couldn't pull you away."

"Sounds like a good cover story to me." She said. They started walking toward camp.

Walking into Camp

"Geez, where were you guys. Apparently out of com range?" Daniel asked as Sam and Jack walked toward him across the open field. He squinted into the sun.

"Sam found a new kind of...What was it?" He looked at her for the answer.

"Plankton," Sam chipped in, " Very fascinating, I couldn't leave without seeing it multiply. Turns out the water is so rich, they divide like human cells."

"Huh." Was all Daniel said, obviously bored at their answer, "Hey, where'd you get that ring? It's nice." Daniel motioned toward Sams finger. She looked at Jack in shock.

"Yeah Sam, where'd the ring come from? Not engaged, are ya?" Jack chuckled nervously.

"It was my grandmothers. I wear it sometimes for good luck. Sorry boys, not engaged." Sam replied all cool and calm. Jack changed the conversation.

"Alright boys, and Sam, pack it up! I got dinner plans." Jack ordered.
