Leah and Jared walked across the hardened path, hand in hand, and it was all so unordinary to Leah. She could practically feel the stones beneath her feet, forcing their way into her cheap, black pumps. They were an old pair of Theo's shoes; she rarely wore footwear around the house, and she went nowhere else apart from there.
It was almost pitch-black outside due to the hour of the morning, and it was hard to see where they were going. Leah's arm was jerking, and she tried leaning it against her body so that Jared couldn't feel it. Her legs were shaking too, and she knew that could only be them pleading to jump into a sprint, but Leah was smarter than that by now. She took a few deep breathes, before looking over at Jared.
When they reached a blue truck, all the memory's swarmed back to Leah; it was a vague memory being kidnapped. It felt as simple as walking out that motel and getting thrown into that truck. Leah knew it had to be more violent than that, but she was a strong believer that moments people experience are softened after they become memories, and they don't seem as horrifying. That is why she had stayed with Derek for so long; after a while of different, dangerous events, what he did to her didn't seem so bad. In her minds that was.
Jared used his left arm to reach into his pocket, and his right arm was practically squeezing the blood out of Leah's first. She knew he wouldn't let go. Leah watched carefully, her eyes avoiding the truck with everything she had. It had caused her lungs to deflate with just one glance.
Jared opened the truck, and she thought he was going to climb in, but he lifted Leah up, and put her inside first. She let out a little oh sound as his arms pressed into her gut. Once she was placed firmly inside, he slammed the door, and ran round to the other side so he could get in.
Leah stared straight forward, taking in the place around her. She'd never seen the farm properly, only through the barrs. It was nothing special. The vegetables were rotting and the animals looked half dead. There was dark, decaying grass coating the ground inside a rusty, brown gate. There was a peeling, old sign in front of them that said, HAY SOLD HERE, which confused Leah as she'd never seen a single customer enter this property; she wasn't surprised.
Leah was knocked out of her thoughts from Jared placing a hand on hers, and she swung her head round to look at him. He was smiling, and she forced one into her lips.
Jared then slowly put his hand in his pocket, and pulled something out. Leah furrowed her eyebrows, perplexed at first when witnessing the long piece of black cloth. Her mouth finally dropped, and she looked back up at Jared with a slightly horrified expression. Was she going to be gagged? What for?
" You have to wear this whilst driving through town," Jared explained with care laced into his words. " You've done nothing wrong, it's just part of the family's traditions."
" Oh.." Leah said, quite relieved and placing a hand upon her chest.
So they would be driving through town? Why would she have to wear that though?
She took it from his hands, but then she stopped for a second and her face pulled back.
Wait a second...
" Is this really necessary, Jared?" Leah asked with a small voice so that Jared wouldn't immediately get maddened.
" Of could it is," Jared knitted his eyebrows together. " I've just told you, it's part of the traditions, now put it on."
" I'm scared though," it wasn't a lie. She felt if she couldn't see anything she didn't really know what could happen. " It's dark out anyway."
Jared gritted his teeth, and she noticed his arm clench beneath his side. " Don't be difficult. Don't you want this house with me?"
