Bang..... Bang.... Bang.... Three heavy knocks on a door is always how this starts.... Crashing and splintering of wood.... Heavy footfalls, bright beams from flashlights.... A girl, scared and shaking is illuminated in the artificial light.. Then everything turns black. Stars and galaxies appear. You fly and realize you're dreaming, a smile lights on your face and you sit on... well nothing, taking a few precious moments to mediate, relax, and reach out before you're slammed back into your physical body.
You sit up, hand flying up to clutch at your frantic heart, sweat drips down your temple and neck. Breathe Mera, I told myself, focusing on evening my breaths and slowing down my heart rate, It was a dream. Write it down so we can reflect on it later. I roll over and open the drawer of my night stand, pulling out a leather bound dream journal and writing down all the details I can remember. I finish writing and look at my dimly lit alarm clock, 3:33 AM, The flight is in 5 hours, but you have to be there 3 hours early. Get up now. I remind myself, taking a moment to look at the neatly packed boxes, full suitcase, and empty carry on. Today is the day I leave for Japan, the first day of my new life and new beginning. I grin and swing my legs off the bed, folding up my singular blanket and travel pillow, placing them at the bottom of the carry on. I unplug my phone and pull up a music playlist, my mind fully waking up as I pack my phone charger and backup battery. I dance in time to the music, grabbing the outfit I left out, and making my way to the bathroom to take a shower and get ready for the day.
I relish in the feeling of hot water running over my body as I sing along with the songs playing, using the last of my body wash, shampoo, and conditioner to clean myself up. I turn off the water once all the products are washed off and quickly dry myself off with an old towel, wrapping it around myself as I brush my teeth and use mouthwash. I smile in the mirror and quickly get dressed, towel drying my hair as best as I can, finishing my routine by putting on some light makeup. I hurry back into my room and pack my carry on with my pjs, toothpaste, tooth brush, makeup, magic tools, spellbook, and a reading book. I pull up the handle of my suitcase, attaching the carry on, and grabbing my satchel like purse, taking a quick look to be sure that my passport and IDs were safely stowed away.
I walk through my empty childhood home one last time, recalling all the happy and painful memories associated with each room. I soon reach the front door, glancing back over my shoulder at the familiar, before stepping out into the unfamiliar. My taxi pulled up as I walked out, a smile creeps on my face as I hurry over, the driver popping open the trunk and helping me stow the suitcase and carry on in the large cavity. We both get in the yellow car and begin the 30 minute drive to the airport, I put headphones in my ears and play a playlist full of sad songs to help me be able to properly say goodbye to my life here. Soft rain falls on the car, creating the perfect weather, in my opinion, I wanted nothing more than to curl up with a hot cup of coffee and watch the rain fall as the scenery passes by.
We arrive at the entrance to the airport terminal, I quietly pay and thank the driver as he helps lift my luggage out of the trunk. I smile and stroll inside, checking in my large suitcase, confirming my boarding information, breezing through security checks and customs. I look down at my watch, 7:30 AM. I have an hour before boarding, enough time to have some breakfast and a cup of coffee. I smile to myself and head to the little cafe that's within the terminal, I take a few moments to mull over the menu before ordering a bowl of steaming oatmeal and a mocha with an extra shot of espresso. I sit by the large windows and watch the rain as I enjoy the food and coffee, watching as the minutes tick by... 45 minutes... 30 minutes... 15 minutes... I get up and throw away the disposable bowl and coffee cup, walking over to the seats in front of the gate's boarding area and taking a seat. The boarding is finally called and my 16 hour Journey begins, I sit in my assigned window seat and relax before falling asleep.
My dreams are filled with nightmares of what transpired only a few months prior... "Ms.Johnson, I'm sorry to inform you that your family has passed away in an unfortunate accident. The cruise ship they were on capsized during a storm and the hull was torn apart by some rocks, by the time rescue crews arrived on the scene there were no survivors left. I'm sorry for your loss. A grief counsellor and a social worker have both been assigned to you, they will be here at 9 AM tomorrow morning to begin going over your options." My heart hammered against my ribcage, my legs wobbled like they were made out of jelly, and I collapsed onto the floor, hot tears streaming down my face as the police officers left me alone. I stayed in that spot on the floor, sobbing through most of the night as grief washes over me in large waves. 9 AM rolled around too soon, and I awoke to a knock on the door. I jump to my feet and rub my eyes, opening the door with a soft sniffle.
"H-hello" I called out, looking at the man and woman in front of me, they must be the social worker and grief counsellor.
"Hi, you must be Mera. I'm Jameson and this is Marcia, may we come in?" The tall man questions, both of them showing me their badges and smiling brightly. I nod and open the door more, biting my lip as more hot tears stream down my cheeks like hot rivers of lava. The woman, Marcia, pulls me into a motherly hug once the door closes. I hold her close as she strokes my hair and comforts me, praising me for being so brave and strong through this hard time. I talk with the man and woman for a few hours, explaining my Quirk situation and how I've had to hide it from everyone except immediate family. They pull out a laptop and show me that I have a living relative in Japan, where quirks are accepted, and that there are "hero" schools for people with quirks. I contacted my relatives and started applying for the schools, pushing my way through the 10 stages of grief with Jameson and Marcia guiding me.
I jolt awake once again and rub my eyes before stretching in my seat. The screen in front of me shows that there is only 6 hours left of my flight. I choose a movie and begin watching, hoping that the hours pass by quickly.
**Time Skip**
I arrive in sunny Japan at 10 AM Japan Standard Time, I reset my watch and pull out my phone, turning it on and hoping that the japanese sim card and phone plan I got would work. Thankfully it did and my phone updated to the correct time. I go through customs, security, baggage pick up and walk out of the terminal. My phone dings and I look down at it, my aunt had texted
Auntie Kora: Hey sweetheart, we are at the terminal pick up.
Me: Okay, I'll be right there.
I smile and hurry over to the pick up area, my bubbly blonde aunt running over from a car and giving me a hug before pulling me along to the car. We load the luggage into the trunk before getting into the car, her husband turning around to smile at me.
"Hello Mera, it good to see you again." Uncle Kai grins, greeting me in broken english before turning around and pulling out of the area and onto the man roads. I watch the scenery excitedly, happy to be in a new place that could finally accept me for who I am and what my quirk is.
"From here on out lets try to speak in only japanese, i know you've been studying but your entrance exams for UA are tomorrow, and exams for the other schools are next week." Auntie Kora smiles, switching into japanese half way through. I nod and smile, shifting a bit nervously before replying.
"That sounds like a good plan Auntie, I just hope I can pass the writing part of the exam. Japanese alphabets are hard to learn." I giggle sheepishly as she nods and grins.
"You're right about that, but with the help of Uncle and I you'll learn quickly." She laughs and shows me her crossed fingers, signaling that she is hoping the best for me.
The rest of the drive passes in a comfortable silence, small talk is exchanged here and there as we drive to their house in the city of Musutafu, near Tokyo.
My new life has begun.
