My dreams were the same as they always are, the same passage of events, waking up in a panic with sweat dripping down my face. I look over at my alarm clock 7:30 AM, I throw back the covers, standing up before rolling up the futon and stowing it away in the closet. I grab my toiletries and head to the bathroom, quickly washing myself before filling the tub with hot water and relaxing. My alarm goes off at 8:30 and I jolt up, draining and rinsing the tub before towel drying my hair and applying my usual goth style makeup. Once done I dash into my room, changing into a black circle skirt with fishnet stockings and shorts underneath, a red sweater crop top, and my usual black hoodie. I pack my utility belt, spell books, magic tools, and school supplies in my holographic backpack. I walk out and grab some leftovers from the fridge, eating half and stowing the container away for lunch. I slide off my slippers and put on my black combat boots, double checking for my metro pass before exiting the apartment and making my way to the nearest subway station. I put my headphones on and listen to some upbeat music, making my time go by quicker than normal. I board the train and pull out one earbud so I can listen for my stop, secretly surprised that I haven’t gotten lost yet.
30 minutes later I find myself at UA, ready for the entrance exams. I approach with a lot of other kids, all of them in uniform, I smile at a grumpy looking blonde boy, a shy green haired boy, and a peppy looking brunette. My social anxiety begins to overtake me as I see all the people applying. The auditorium is packed to the brim with students. I take a deep breath, double checking my assigned number on the intake form and sitting at my assigned desk. The written test is soon underway, my answers are mostly written in Japanese, only a few answers and words in english. I finish my test and turn the paper over, signalling that I had completed it, I look up at the screen and watch as the minutes count down… 20 minutes….. 15 minutes…. 10 minutes…..5 minutes…. I took advantage of this extra time, studying the other students to gauge how tough the competition would be.
The horn for the timer goes off and the tests are all collected by the pro hero teachers. We take a quick break for lunch before the hero Present Mic begins explaining the practical exams, displaying a Mario like video game to show the objectives. A boy with blue-black hair raises his hand and goes off on a tangent about the 4th kind of villain as well as the green haired boy mumbling. I roll my eyes and sigh, understanding why the boy is so uptight, but also wishing he would loosen up and live a bit. We are dismissed to change into exercise clothes, but I prefer to stay in my current clothes as they are comfortable and provide the most mobility. I leave my magic tools in their bag, my instincts telling me not to bring them. After a good 15 minutes everyone is grouped up at the gate for Training Grounds Beta, I see the green haired boy look nervous, and start to approach the peppy brunette from earlier, only he gets stopped by the uptight blue haired guy and get chewed out. I approach the two with a bit of a frown.
“Is there an issue here?” I ask the two of them, my green eyes filled with a fiery annoyance.
“He was going to go distract that girl so he can have a head start.” The blue haired boy stated as if it was a fact, I recalled the events from earlier and sighed.
“I think that isn’t the case, she caught him from falling before the written exam. I would say he was going over to thank her for that since he didn’t get a chance earlier.” I quipped, challenging the boy’s point of view, “I would suggest being observant and looking at situations from different perspectives rather than just assuming and acting rashly. Remember that the way you conduct yourself and treat others also reflects on you, your family, and school.”
I look up at the loud announcer from before as he announces the test start without a countdown, explaining that there are no countdowns in real life. I smirk and run off, branching away from the main group immediately, and casting a simple flying spell to get a bird’s eye view. I zoom around, observing a wide range of the area and getting a good lay of the land. I spy a few other UA hopefuls cornered by some 3 point villians, I grit my teeth and allow myself to freefall towards the area. I squeak and catch myself, quickly taking out the villians with a swift use of an ice spell, using it to freeze the internal components and short circuit the robots. The students look at me in shock and mutter thanks as I make sure they are uninjured and safe before taking off again. I spend the first five or so minutes continuing this, deciding not to focus exclusively on taking out villians, but on the safety of the other applicants. Act like a hero, help others and fight. I continue to tell myself, huffing as my body begins to tire and my muscles beginning to ache from all my effort. That’s when the whole test shifted, the large 0 point villains were released, causing the ground to break and rumble in every section. Applicants began screaming and running away in panic, looking for any way to avoid the huge robot. I land in front of it and stand my ground, directing the panicked students towards a safer area. I scan the area, trying to make sure everyone was safe when I spotted the peppy girl from earlier trapped under a large pile of rubble. I sprint over as quickly as I can, reaching a hand out to the girl as, the green haired boy jumped, trying to stop the large robot from smashing the girl. I have to help her, I need to make sure her leg is alright. My intuition interrupts my thoughts, and I begin to act on instinct, doing whatever necessary to assist her. Time seems to slow and I cast a spell to help me lift up the debris so she can pull her leg out as the villain slowly rolls closer. I glance up at the boy as he free falls back down toward us, my eyes widen when I see how injured he is. I run to the girl and help her up to the head of a robot, she uses her quirk to make the robot float, I guide the object closer to where the boy will fall, hoping with all my heart that she can touch him. Breathe. Wait. Trust. I tell myself, trusting my intuition. I hear the smack and the girl struggling to release the boy and robots once his momentum fully stopped. I sigh in relief before rushing over to the boy, empathizing with him as he crawls with his one good arm, determined to try and get one point.
“TIME IS UP!” Present Mic announces loudly and the boy looks devastated, giving up and laying on the ground. Recovery Girl, the school nurse, approaches the boy, handing out gummy candy before giving him a kiss on the head to heal his wounds before the stretcher robots take him away to recover.
I scan the crowd for the girl with brown hair, hoping to catch her before she leaves. “Hey!” I shout after spotting her, dashing to walk with her. “I’m Kayda, you were amazing back there.” I smile softly and she smiles back, rubbing the back of her neck nervously.
“Thanks you were also pretty great out there you know, I don’t know what I would’ve done without you or that green haired boy… the plain looking one. I’m Uraraka Ochako by the way, it’s very nice to meet you!” Uraraka-san smiles and bows slightly to me, giggling and smiling happily.
“I hope that boy is alright, Recovery Girl is amazing, I just worry that his body may not take to the healing very well.” I confided in her, my anxiety beginning to get the best of me as we walk and talk. We make our way to the area Present Mic was cleaning up after the exams, and talking with some of the other teachers. Uraraka has a plan to ask the teachers to give the boy some of her own points. I wait outside, confident the boy would get in due to his heroic actions in the exam. After she was done we continue walking and talking until we get to the metro station, quickly exchanging numbers before getting on different trains to continue to our homes.
I soon reach the apartment building and continue onto our floor and to the apartment door, entering in my pincode and taking off my shoes, slipping on my slippers and smiling as my aunt comes over to greet me.
“Hey sweetie! You look a bit tired, I made some food, lets sit and talk about your exam while eating.” Aunt Kora grins, taking my bag and leading me over to the table where fresh food is set out.
“Thank you Aunt Kora, it looks delicious.” I compliment her cooking and sit down, waiting for her to sit as well before getting food and giving her all the details of what happened during the exams and the new friend I met.
“That’s awesome honey, I’m so proud of you and I’m so glad you made a friend as well! You should invite her over sometime so Uncle Kai and I can meet her as well.” Aunt Kora exclaims, letting her happiness show through fully. We continue chatting and cleaning up the kitchen, washing the dishes and taking care of some general chores. After a while I yawn and excuse myself to my room, collapsing on my bed and quickly falling asleep.
