I Was Never Good At Sports

A week with no news passed, my anxiety doubling with every passing day. I sighed as I checked the mail, flipping through the envelopes as I walk back up to the apartment and unlocked the door. Bills, coupons, a letter for Uncle Kai from the police station…. And a letter for me…. From UA. I gasp and set down the other pieces of mail on the counter, sitting down in one of the stools nearby and carefully breaking the wax seal. Inside was a letter and a small round disk, I had heard about the hologram displays but had never actually seen one. I carefully set it down and the screen flicks into life, causing my heart to race as I see All-Might… Toshinori-sama on the screen smiling brightly.

"Hello young Kayda! It must be a shock for you to see me appear like this, first things first, you are looking at the newest UA faculty member! I will be joining UA to assist them in producing the greatest of heros!" He exclaims, chucking and smoothing out his yellow striped suit. "Secondly, I want to congratulate you. Your written exam was almost perfect, though you need to work on writing in Japanese," he chuckled, winking as he knew how much of a struggle the writing system was for me. "And you passed the practical exam in 4th place with  36 combat points and 40 rescue points. The judges were impressed with your ability to help others and keep calm in stressful situations. That being said, welcome to your new path in hero academia!" The man boomed enthusiastically before the disc grew dim and shut off. I stare in shock, tears dropping down my face as Uncle Kai came in.

"Mera… is something wrong?" He asked, gently touching my shoulder as he looks at the disk and discarded envelope. I shake my head and smile, wiping away the tears.

"I got in…. I'm so relieved I passed and got in 4th place during the exams." I beam while chattering away, telling him what Toshinori-sama had said in the message. I set the hologram to play again for Uncle Kai, carefully opening the enclosed letter and reading through all the materials I would need before my first day of school. I hum and summon a pencil, quickly filling out the uniform ordering paper and slipping it into the return envelope, bouncing happily as my uncle embraces me. I cling onto him and smile brightly, beginning to ask about his day and handing him the letter from the police station. My uncle's actual name is Naomasa Tsukauchi, he is a detective for the local police precinct and a close friend to Toshinori-sama. I have him the nickname Uncle Kai as I couldn't pronounce his name when he and my aunt first met, so he let me shorten it to Kai rather than Tsukauchi. Apparently he is one of their best detectives, given the code name True man from all his determination and hard work. I grin as my Aunt Kora walks in, looking exhausted from doing hero work all day.

“Is something the matter?” She questions cautiously, looking between my uncle and I’s grinning faces and the letter we both hold.

“Nope! Just some exciting news…. I got into UA. My first day is in 3 weeks!” I exclaim, causing her to scream and hug me in a sweet mix of surprise and happiness. She lets go of me and bounces, brown curly hair flying in every direction from her excitement and passion.

“OH MY GODS I’M SO PROUD OF YOU!!!! My little Mera is all grown up and becoming a hero!” She gently cups my face before hugging me and turning back to Uncle Kai. “What’s your grin about?” she asks impatiently, tapping her foot as she looks him over. He simply beams and hands her the letter, keeping his excitement at bay for the moment.

“I’m getting my own desk at the precinct, no more sharing!” Uncle Kai chuckles, continuing to grin as my aunt reads the letter. I swear my cunning uncle gets excited over the littlest things. Whenever my Aunt cooks him his favorite meal he bends over in gratitude and showers her in affection, if he gets a present he cries and treasures it more than anything. I giggle and leave them to their affection and merry making, taking the list of things needed back to my room and looking over it again.
