Ella's POV:

"I'm going over to Ashton's for dinner, you wanna come?" I walked down into the living room where Townes was after I finished getting ready.

"No." He flipped through the channels on tv.

"What? Why not?" I furrowed my eyebrows.

"Just don't want to, I'll probably go down the pier and grab something." He pulled his eyes off of the tv for a split second to look at me.

"Okay fine." I said annoyed. Townes was acting so weird lately. And I don't know if it was because of the move and he didn't have any friends here or it was something bigger. I sighed and walked outside and ran across the street to Ashton's house. I knocked on the door and waited a few moments until the door swung open.

"Hi Harry." I smile.

"Hello Ella Kate." Harry laughed and let me walk inside. We walked into the kitchen where their mom was trying to finish cooking.

"Oh Ella darling hi, I would hug you but I'm a mess." She gave me a small smile.

"Don't worry about it, do you need any help?"

"I'm fine thank you, maybe you could go check on Ashton."

"Okay." I nod and bite my lip. I walk down the hallway where Ashton's room was. I knock twice and there was no answer so I just walked in. He wasn't lying on his bed or sitting on the chair or anything. I was about to tell Anne that Ashton wasn't in his room but something on the desk caught my eye. I get a little closer so I can see it and pick up the paper.

Torn in two and I know I shouldn't tell you but I just can't stop thinking of you wherever you are, you, wherever you are. Every night I almost call you just to say it always will be you, wherever you are.

Because me being me I was curious so I kept reading. I knew Ashton wrote songs but I didn't think he was actually good at it and I wanted to know what the song was about.

I could fly a thousand oceans but there's nothing that compares to what we had, and so I walk alone. I wish I didn't have to be gone maybe you've already moved on but the truth is I don't want to know... you can say we'll be together someday. Nothing lasts forever, nothing stays the same so why can't I stop feeling this way.

"What are you doing?" Ashton walked into his room wearing nothing but a towel on his lower half with his hair soaking wet.

"Why did you shower?" I try to change the subject.

"What are you doing?" He asked again, this time raising his voice. He walked over to me and grabbed the paper out of my hand.

"I was- I was just-" I stare at the paper in his hands.

"Did you read this?" Ashton breathes.

"I mean I- yes I read it." I sigh. "Did you write it?"

"Why were you reading it?" Ashton looks at me. His face has angry written all over it.

"It was just sitting there." I felt like I was about to cry.

"Why were you even in my room?"

"Your mom told me to come get you."

"Well I wasn't in here." He snapped.

"Did you- did you write that about me ash?"

"Why would I do that?" He scoffs.

"Well I mean it sounds like you did-"

"I didn't." He stares at me. "Can you leave so I can change?"

"Yeah sure." I nod and walk out of his room and close the door behind me. I walked back into the kitchen and cleared my throat.

"He just got out of the shower, he'll be out soon." I gave them a weak smile. Then Anne set the table and I took a seat down next to Lauren. Ashton didn't come out for another 3 minutes. When he came out he made eye contact with me and clenched his jaw before sitting down. Dinner was awkward and it was my fault. I knew I shouldn't have read the paper but I couldn't help myself. I only talked to Lauren and sometimes Anne when she would ask me questions. Ashton wouldn't say anything except if Harry was being annoying or making too much noise.

"Thank you Anne it was great." I put my dish in the sink and wash it off.

"Oh honey don't do that." She waved her hands around. "Ash do that for her, darling you're the guest." Ashton rolled his eyes and stood up.

"Really? I'm hardly a guest." I laughed. "You don't need to Ashton, I got it." I said as he made his way over to the sink.

"Just move." He muttered and bumped me off to the side and washed off my plate and his.

"Thank you." I said quietly.

"Yeah yeah." He sighed and wiped his hands off.

"Do you kids have any homework." Anne asked Harry and Lauren who were still at the table.

"We should talk." I look up at Ashton.

"There's nothing to talk about." He whispered.

"Who did you write the song for then?"

"I don't wanna talk about this now." Ashton sighed.

"If it's not important then why can't you just tell me?" I furrow my eyebrows.

He rolled his eyes and made his way to his front door. I didn't know what to do so I just followed him. He walked outside and sat down on the steps, so i did the same. We didn't say anything for a long time.

"Ashton." I took a big breathe.

"Hm?" He didn't look at me.

"I- I just thought because I didn't tell you where I was and we lost touch-"

"I don't know Ella, it was just feelings I wrote down, it could be about you it probably is but I wrote that song so long ago." He ran his fingers through his hair.

"You didn't, you know, like me or anything right?" I asked slowly, hoping that he won't say he did.

"What? no no no you're like my...best friend that's weird." He cracked a smile.

"Good." I rest my head on his shoulder. "Everyone used to say that we would be the two best friends that would fall in love and get married but I never thought so. I mean that's such a cliché and we don't do clichés."

"Right, we'll never be those people." Ashton sighed.

I mean sure Ashton was a great person and he was cute and funny and all but he was more than my best friend he was like my brother and he was the only person I really had left. I couldn't fall in love with him or like him at all because that would just be too weird for me.

"I should probably get you home now, it's getting kinda late." He put his hand on my knee.

"Yeah, we have school tomorrow." I breathe. Ashton stands up and fixes his hair.

"Come on EK." He held he hand out for me to grab. I took it and he pulled me up. "So do you want me to wait for you tomorrow?" He turned to me.

"Yeah, I think Townes is mad at me or something." I shrug.

"He's probably is just having some hard times with the move, it's new to him."

"Maybe." I walk up the steps of my house and Ashton follows.

"I'll see you tomorrow Ella." Ash gave me weak smile and pulled me in for a hug.

"Bye Ash." I wave before I walk inside and close the door.

-
