Kristof

My hand feels better now. I can finally write what happened that night after your party, the night I decided to tell you what I've always wanted to tell you.
I didn't know what would happen next if you open that box and find out I'm that fat kid who wore a carrot costume and looked like an idiot. But you are my best buddy and I didn't want to hide it from you anymore. Especially now that we would not be able to hangout for three years.
It was stupid to think that you would not be friends with me just because I was a fat, bullied kid. You were the nicest person I have ever met and you still are now.
After I finally thought about that and decided to give you the box, I went home and watched our favorite cartoon show, Adventure time, to keep myself from thinking too much about you and my trip to New York.
When I heard the phone ring, I quickly stood up and answered it.
"Hello?" A shaky voice answered. It was you. I smiled because I kinda knew, or maybe, hoped it was gonna be you. "May I speak to Kristof, please?" You spoke again.
"It's me," I spoke back.
"Hey, Kristof! You just told me you're Mr. Carrot and now you're telling me that you're leaving?!" You suddenly yelled, making me smile, from ear to ear. "I hate you!" You yelled again and then I heard a sob.
"Why are you so mad at me? And are you crying? because I'm leaving?" I asked, still smiling widely.
"Did you not hear me? Are you that heartless? You'll leave your best buddy for a long time and you'll tell her just when you're about to leave?!" You sobbed again.
"What?" I chuckled. I don't know what was wrong with me but I couldn't help but feel happy. "Listen, I'm not gonna leave until December. You thought I was gonna leave tomorrow?"
"You said you were leaving with your brother! like tonight!" You raised your already high pitched voice much higher.
"No, I didn't say anything about leaving tonight," I said, still smiling widely,"Read it again."
I heard a crumpling sound. "Katie, I've known you were that silly bunny, who lost her tooth, ever since we bumped into each other at the park," you started reading the letter quickly and out loud with a robotic voice, "Sorry for telling you this just now. My brother and I have to leave the city. Even if I'll be gone for three years, I will still miss you, toothless Bunny," You fell silent, realizing I was right, I think.
"But you're still leaving!" You spoke again.
"Yes, but I will be back after three years. I just have to live with my grandparents for a while."
"A while? You call three years a while?"
I laughed a little. "You're really gonna miss me so much, aren't you?"
"Of course! You're my best buddy!"
"I'll hang up and go there, okay? Wait for me."
It was still early, around 7pm so I just went to your house again. You waited for me at your doorstep. I saw you wiping your eyes with your hands. I walked up to you and stretched out my sleeve towards you. You grabbed it and used it to wipe the tears that fell down to your chin. Then we both smiled, thinking how using my shirt to wipe your tears has become a normal thing.
"Don't worry!" I said, trying not to sound suddenly unhappy and then threw my arm across your shoulder like what you always do to me. I'm really gonna miss that. "You still have May, your other best friend." I continued.
May is also a nice friend and I knew you could also count on her. You just met last month but you had already become good friends. May never really talked to me that much but maybe she's just really shy and I guess, I am too.
"Yeah, but," You mumbled, dropping your head down, "She doesn't like to watch soccer games and also doesn't like to play at the park," You really sounded sad about me leaving and I was just happy that you were. Is that a bad thing?
"Tell you what, let's hang out as many times as we can at the park until December," I said and you looked at me, "So that you'll get tired of being at the park and just miss going there by the time I get back."
You were silent for a few seconds. "I really don't think that would work but," You start to smile, "Okay, let's start tomorrow."
And then Jake went out the door and saw us. So I took my hand off of you, whispered "meet you at ten," and then darted away before Jake could open his mouth and make everything feel awkward.
----
Yesterday, we didn't get to hang out much because Jake kept telling me to go and buy ice cream, cotton candy, and some other snacks. This morning, we went to the park again. I thank that girl who tripped on Jake and kept him busy. They kept talking and we sneaked away from them.
We went to the bridge over the pond. While I was watching two swans float beside each other, you leaned close to my ear and said "Animal channel says swans share a bond that can last for a lifetime," You crossed your arms over the railing and sighed, "I hope we can be like them. Friends for life."
"Why? Do you think we won't be friends anymore?" I asked.
"You're gonna stay somewhere else for three years and meet cooler and more awesome friends ," you whined, "You might not even miss me." You shrugged your shoulder like you were cool about it. I didn't say anything back.
I didn't know what to tell you.
Well, actually, I didn't know how to tell you.
I didn't know how to tell you that I will miss you and that I do want us to be like swans too.
And that I was afraid you were the one who won't really miss me that much.
But I just said it, in this picture. Maybe I'll send this picture to you when I'm already in New York because you might kill me if you see this photo of you. Just to remind you, I took it last month at our field trip. It was when we where at the zoo and you felt a bug fly under your nose. You kept poking your nose, believing that you would really catch a bug somewhere in there. It's disgusting but hilarious and I love it, the photo, I mean.
