My mom came home around nineish. She came to check on Travis and I. I smiled as she opened the door. My amazing boyfriend had one arm slung over me and the other haning off the bed. Mom smiled.
"I thought you would be asleep by now."
"No, I haven't taken those sleeping pills yet. I was waiting for you to come home." I moved out from under Travis's arm and stood up.
"Is everything okay?" I nodded, but my dad still remained in my head.
"Can I talk to you?" I heard Travis move from the bed.
"Baby," He called in a mutter.
"I'll be right back." I kissed his forhead and he fell back to sleep.
I walked into Mom's room and sat down on her bed. How was I gonna address my dad to her? It was a very sensitive topic in this house. We didn't bring him up unless it was needed.
"Dad came by." Maybe I'll start off lightly.
"Yea." She was occupied putting clothes away.
"Yeah, he told me I could have always talked to him about my situation. That he was gonna be there no matter what. Can I ask you something, Mom?" She stopped moving and turned around.
"You're dad didn't leave because you tried to commit suicide." So, they were lying to me the entire time?
"Then why'd he leave?" I was fighting back tears now.
"Because, he found another woman." Dad was a cheater. Mom was naive. I was a suicidal. This family was seriously messed up. The only person that was turning out okay was my sister.
"Oh," My mouth felt dry and I couldn't seem to get the next sentence out. "So, does dad really love us. Or was it all a lie?" My mom shrugged and I felt myself leave the bed.
I escaped to my room with tears quietly pooling out of my eyes. For almost two years now, I've been left feeling like I was the cause of my parent's divorce. I felt like my suicide attempt ruined a perfect family. But, through my suffering, he was cheating on not only my mom, but my family. I grabbed my phone off the nightstand and quickly moved to the back porch as I dialed Dad's number.
"Hello." He instantly picked up the phone.
"Hey, Dad." I sniffled and felt a cold breeze wrap around me.
"Hey, Alice." It was tough. I swallowed.
"I heard why you left.." I felt a tear slip and I quickly brushed it away.
"I'm so sorry,"
"For almost two years, I felt like it was my fault. I felt like my attempt pushed you away. Maybe it would be bad if people found out that Judge Wills' daughter tried to commit. I honestly thought I was the reason you left," I choked on my own words.
"You didn't push me away because of that."
"I thought that you didn't want anything else to do with my family. Mom told me that you cheated on her. But, to me, you didn't cheat on just her. You cheated on my family. You broke my trust. I sat here feeling sorry for myself and the entire time, it was nothing but a lie. You showed up at my house pretending to care. If you cared, you would have stuck around in my life until you knew I was better. But, you got up and left. Do you know why I ended up in the hospital again?" There was a moment of silence. "Because I tried to kill myself again Dad. I self harmed about a month or two ago and I lost Travis. Then, I stopped eating and my sleeping habits faded. But, you didn't know that."
"I'm so sorry, Alice," I hung up the phone before he could finish. How could my entire life be a lie? I knew my family wasn't happy together, but I didn't expect it to be this bad. How could I sit here and feel pity for myself when I didn't even know the truth?
I dragged myself back up the stairs and into my room. I took my sleeping meds and laid down beside Travis. I knew he'd be gone by the time I woke up in the morning, but I was gonna cling to his presence now. I wrapped my legs around him. He rolled over.
"Are you okay?" He asked as he turned on the light.
"Yeah," I whispered.
"Are you sure?" He reached up and wiped away the tears that were silently falling.
"I love you so much, Bunny."
"I love you too, Baby." I smiled and kissed his cheek. He turned off the light and I curled up to him again.
"Don't leave me in the morning." I whispered as my medicine started carrying me away. I didn't hear what he said.
I woke up in the morning to a boy who had his arms wrapped around me and his head on my shoulder. He was passed out. His blonde hair was dishelved and I ran my fingers through it. Moments like these make me remember why I fell in love with him. Yes, I may not be the strongest person, but I can handle it. He's been such a pleasure. I smiled.
"Good morning, Princess."
"Morning, Sweetheart." He grabbed my side and I giggled.
