legacy
7:00pmfinally, it was the end to an exhausting day. the boys and i spent all day rescuing people, helping lost children and dealing with some injuries and we just wanted to pack up and leave as soon as possible. reidy, mouse and i gathered up all the signs and flags and watched the water as we did. there were still many people on the beach and some were still in the water. most of them kept close to shore, knowing us lifeguards were done for the day. others went out too far and were having trouble getting back in.
"look at those two!" reidy exclaimed as he pointed to a couple about 80 meters from shore. they floated on a small boggie board and tried kicking their way in.
"they're not going to make it back any time soon" i said as we laughed at them.
"i guess i'm going out then" mouse groaned as he hopped off the rhino, took off his jersey and ran in with a lifeboard.
"this should be good" reidy chuckled as he crossed his arms and stared at the couple.
mouse paddled his way out to the exhausted couple and made it just in time. they grabbed on to his board as he pulled their boggie board away. the boyfriend helped get his girl onto the board first then he got up himself. mouse caught a perfect wave and it was a good last rescue for the day.
"people man" mouse said as he hopped back onto the rhino, wrapped up in his towel. reidy and i laughed at him as we drove back up to the tower.
i left the boys in the garage and made my way up to the tower where my dad, jesse, azza and bacon were cleaning up.
"hey" i said to them as i entered.
"ready to finally go home?" my dad asked as he hung up his jersey.
"so ready" i told him as i followed his actions. we put on our lifeguard windbreakers and grabbed our keys.
"legacy" i heard jesses voice from behind. i turned around and his crystal blue eyes met mine. the butterflies were back and danced around in my stomach.
"hey jesse" i smiled at him, "we haven't really seen each other all day"
"yeah, after what happened i wanted to talk but it felt like you pushed me away" his voice sounded a little hurt and i gasped.
"it did? jesse, i'm sorry if it felt like that i just didn't know how to react" guilt washed over me as i frowned.
"it's okay, i understand how you felt" he gave me a reassuring smile.
"are you working tomorrow?" i asked, really hoping he wasn't.
"nah, i'm free"
my heart skipped a beat, "great! let's do something tomorrow"
he smiled, "i'd be happy too"
"hanging out again? you guys really can't stay away from each other" my dad said before chuckling, "now let's go i'm starving and i need a beer" we all laughed before leaving the tower and heading our separate ways.
"remember what i told you about those bra boys" my dad broke the silence as we walked home.
i sighed, "dad, jesse and i are just friends. you don't need to worry"
