"He is no threat to us. Just a simple man, we need not kill him" Jon hissed.
"He'll tell the watch that we're here. We kill the man" Tormund insisted as Orell nodded in agreement.
Jon did not feel right about this, he could not take part in the killing of innocents. So as the party moved closer to attack the farmstead, Jon threw a rock, alerting the old man who quickly fled. In an attempt to stop the man, Ygritte quickly reached for her arrows, but again Jon distracted her and the old man was able to put more distance between himself and the attackers.
Unbeknown to Jon, in the abandoned mill not far away from the wildlings, Bran and Jojen Reed discussed how they planned to cross the Wall. Meera, the sister of Jojen who had found them as they fled Winterfell, spotted the old horse breeder riding nearby. She continued to watch as the old man was captured by the wildlings. Scared by the thunder, Hodor began yelling, and Bran knew he would give away their location, so using his newfound Warg abilities, Bran entered Hodors mind and caused him to pass out.
Back outside in the Farmstead, Tormund and Orell had captured the old man, despite Jon's best efforts and as Tormund was about the kill the man, Orell called out. "Let Snow do it, let him prove his loyalty."
Jon stared at the group and then the horsebreeder, with a heavy sigh he positioned himself to bring down his sword on the man. He couldn't do it though, Jon was still the man he left the wall as and he could never harm or kill an innocent. The other two men were growing more impatient and suspicious though, and before Jon could speak, Ygritte killed the man with an arrow. His story had been blown now, the wildlings would never trust him again, and Tormund ordered his men to kill Jon. Instantly, a battle broke out, but Jon was able to cut down the other men until only Orell and Tormund were left standing. Ygritte was screaming after him and Tormund had to hold onto the girl as Job continued to fight with Orell.
Back within the relative safety of the mill, Jojen urged Bran to enter the mind of Summer, his direwolf, and aid Jon. Summer and Shaggydog then killed two wildlings threatening Jon as he continued to battle to the death with Orell and finally killed him, but with the last of his strength, Orell warged into the mind of his pet eagle, which suddenly swooped down and attacked Jon. He is able to quickly fight the bird off though, before stealing a horse and escaping, leaving Ygritte to head back to the Wall with Tormund.
Jon did not stop until he reached the safety of Castle Black. Half unconscious, he was quickly taken inside for medical help. Through the milk of the poppy, he slept for 3 days straight, but when he finally awoke, he was met by Samwell who had only more grave news for him.
"Robb is dead?" Jon whispered once his dear friend had finished speaking.
"I am sorry Jon," Samwell repeated again nervously.
"My sister, Natari, has there been any word of her?"
"I'm afraid not."
Jon was given no time to let the news sink in. Instead, he was pulled in front of a panel of five sworn brothers, including Maestor Aemon and the acting Lord Commander, Alliser Thorne, who had no love for Jon. In an attempt to plead his case, Jon tried to explain to the panel that he only joined the wildlings in order to survive. He had also learnt a great deal about the people which would be usual in their future battles with them.
"Mance intends to attack the wall. A small group have already made it over. It is only a matter of time until we find an entire army at our gates," Jon insisted.
"You forgot your oath boy!" Thorne roared.
"If we beheaded every ranger that bedded a girl, the wall would be guarded by a headless army," Aemon added, resulting in a few chuckles from the other brothers.
