Way Too Far

Gray smoke filled the room, and it felt like there was no oxygen in the air. The door remained glued shut, and the alarm blared throughout the building, enough to drive anyone crazy. Screaming for help wasn't helping, especially how the constant coughing drained any remaining energy...

The Day Before

Derek finally arrived at the BAU after dropping off Alyssa at her high school. He sat by his wooden desk filled with papers and files. The place was surprisingly quiet, but his desk wasn't. The clock ticked by slowly, and everyone was relieved to take a break for their lunch.

"How's Alyssa been lately?" JJ asked, concerned by her past actions and her involvement with Kara. From the little she knew, JJ knew Kara was a bad influence on Alyssa and hated how it drove a wedge between Alyssa and Derek.

"Better, she's barely been in trouble recently," he replied when his phone started ringing. He looked and sighed, burying his face in his hands.

"Who is it?" JJ asked

"Alyssa's school," he answered. 'Of course,' he thought and hesitantly answered the phone.

Alyssa remained seated, waiting somewhat patiently. She looked around the room, waiting nervously for the principal to return. The girl had no idea where he went, making her slightly worried. She hoped that the school wouldn't ring Derek. The last thing she needed was Derek's yelling. The principal returned with Derek behind him. Of course. Just when Alyssa thought her day couldn't get any worse.

"What happened to you?" Morgan wondered, looking at the girl whose hair was all tangled and clothes stained different colours.

"It wasn't me," she said

"Never heard that one before," Principal Crossley said sarcastically, gesturing Derek to sit in the chair next to the girl. Then, he proceeded to explain what happened. "Alyssa, along with Kara Evergreen, Alice Weathers, Rachael Winters, and Erica Markey caused a food fight in the cafeteria today, and it got quite out of hand" his narrow eyes pointing at Alyssa

"Alyssa!" Derek spat out, completely shocked by her actions.

"It wasn't me!" she claimed

"It never seems to be you, does it?" Derek said, and Alyssa slouched in her chair. "I apologize for Alyssa's actions, Principal Crossley, and I agree with any punishment you plan to give to her."

"Derek, what the hell!" Alyssa shouted. How could he do that?

"Kara Evergreen has been temporarily suspended due to other reasons. I was thinking Alyssa and the others could help clean the cafeteria and spend the next two weeks in detention, but I'm dismissing her for the rest of the day, " Principal Crossley said

"That's fair," Derek agreed, infuriating the girl sat next to him.

"That cafeteria is huge, this isn't fair," she exclaimed, but both of them ignored her. Derek and the principal agreed on her punishment before walking out. Alyssa stormed to the car and slammed the door behind her.

"What the hell is wrong with you? How could you betray me like that?" she asked

"Betray you!? What the hell made you think it was OK to start a food fight in the cafeteria!" the agent yelled

"It wasn't me who started it!"

"It's never you starts it. It's always Kara who started this and started that."

The two continued to argue all the way back to the BAU. The team was stunned to see them argue their way down the stairs and to Morgan's desk.

"This isn't up for discussion, Alyssa!" Derek told her

"You never listen to me!" Alyssa shouted

"What's going on?" Rossi asked, hearing the commotion from his office. Alyssa turned on her heels and began to walk away.

"Where do you think you're going?" Derek called after her

"Penelope, the only reasonable person here," Alyssa yelled, rushing off to go find the technical analyst. Rossi looked at Morgan, who explained everything that had just happened.

Alyssa knocked on Garcia's door before coming in.

"Oh hey Alyssa, how are you?" she asked with her cheery tone and smile. Alyssa closed the door and sat in one of the chairs opposite Penelope and explained everything to her. How unfair Derek's actions were.

"Why did you start a food fight in the cafeteria?" Garcia asked, surprised, like everyone else, at the incident.

"My friend from the cheer squad, Erica Markey, was arguing with Alison, and it all went downhill from there,"

"What were they arguing about?"

"I don't know. I didn't know what was happening until half a sandwich was thrown at me. "

Garcia nodded as she continued to listen. She didn't agree with how Alyssa reacted and agreed with Derek, who too was concerned about the girls Alyssa was hanging around with. About an hour later, Derek came to collect Alyssa. None of them spoke a single word even when they returned home. Derek relaxed in the living room before getting up to get a glass of water from the kitchen, coming across Alyssa with the same idea. The agent found the silent treatment ridiculous and decided to say something.

"Just what has gotten into you, kid?" he said. Alyssa looked at him with narrow eyes. Of course, he's blaming her for this.

"How many times, it wasn't me!" she continued to claim

"Fine. How did this whole thing start?"

"Erica was arguing with Alison and th-"

"Alison? Why does this always involve either Kara or Alison?" Derek interrupted. He didn't understand any of this.

"I can't believe this," Alyssa said, her voice being drowned out by Derek. When he finally stopped talking, she continued to speak. "I can't believe you!"

"Believe me? It wasn't me who started a food war. "

"It wasn't me who started it!"

"Of course it wasn't. If anything, I thought you would be nice to this Alison seeming it was your father who killed her mother and sister, " the agent said in the heat of the moment and regretted it instantly. He didn't mean that. He didn't mean to say it. Why did he say that? Alyssa was frozen for a second, processing his words that cut deep like a knife.
