Derek drove Alyssa home when her treatment was administered to her. She was surprised how quick the doctors were. They drove past Alyssa's school and through the closed window, people in tyvek suits roamed the school with huge vans parked outside. She felt her phone vibrate in her jacket and checked it curiously.

"Who is it?" Derek asked

"Just Kara checking up on me?" When mentioning Kara, she remembered what Principal Crossley said 'you're the only one she remains loyal to'.

Kara
Erica fainted in class earlier! How are you feeling?

Kara
Are you getting these?

Kara
Just heard you fainted! Everyone's talking about (the ones that are left) Are you okay?

Alyssa
Returning home now, yes I'm fine. How's Erica and Alice

Kara
I don't know, haven't talked to them. I'm more interested in how you're feeling. Is it the flu going round or something. Weird, it's not even winter

Alyssa
It's not the flu, surprised you haven't heard

Kara
Heard what?!

Alyssa
The doctor said it was hydrogen cyanide poisoning!

Kara
Really? I remember learning about that in chemistry class! Thought it was lethal

Alyssa
It can be. Depends on exposure

Kara
Don't worry, I'll murder the person who tried to kill my best friend

Alyssa sent a laughing emoji before finishing their conversation. They arrived home, Derek kept his cool but Alyssa knew this whole thing was bothering him. It bothered her to. This was done on purpose. Both entered the house and removed their coats.

"Does this mean I get to miss school?" Alyssa said happily, trying her best to distract Derek and herself. Derek gave her a weak smile and nodded.

An hour later, there was a knock at the door that echoed. Alyssa jumped and rushed to the door where Derek stood opening the door.

"Hello...does... Alyssa live here?" A man asked. He wore a thick mossy green coat and baggy jeans. He looked bald at first sight, but strands of grey hair grew on his head.

"Yeah... that's me. Do I know you?" The girl responded, taking a few steps forward but shielding herself behind Derek who looked equally confused and curious.

"Can we help you?" Derek asked

"I'm... Henry...Henry Johnson" He began. "I'm Hanna May's father." He seemed nervous and anxious like he's never talked to a human being before. Derek and Alyssa exchanged looks. Was this her grandfather?

"You're my grandfather?" Alyssa replied astonished. Henry hesitated, trying to say something but couldn't get the words out. "Wow. I never thought I'd meet you" Alyssa filled the silence

"I'm sorry about that. It's a long story" Henry said without hesitating or stuttering

"I've got time. We can talk now. How about your place? Ally mentioned my mom grew up there, I'd love to see it" she said quickly and smiled widely. Henry returned the smile but slightly weaker.

"If that's okay with you?" He turned to Derek

Alyssa turned to Derek with a pleasing expression on her face.

"Please!"

"Sure, but I'm coming with you" he  made clear. Alyssa agreed, so excited to learn more about her mother.

They arrived at Henry's house. Nothing special. It was an ordinary house, a paper white door with the bronze colored numbers 12 screwed in. All three climbed the steep three steps to the door. Henry pushed the key in the lock and turned it. It clicked and the door pushed open. Heat escaped the house and blew past them. They entered the living room where one jet black couch leaned against the wall with identical armchairs on opposite sides. An old fashioned looking TV sat in front on a glass coffee table. Pictures dotted the walls and Alyssa felt a feeling of amazement. Pictures of her grandparents and her mom and aunt filled the walls. They all seemed so happy and confident. Unlike the man they were with right now.

"I'm not really the one for upgrading, if that's what you would call it" Henry added. "Hanna's, your mom's room" he corrected "is upstairs. First door on your right"

Alyssa smiled from one ear to the other.

"Go look if you'd like while I go find something you might like" Henry offered. Alyssa nodded enthusiastically and bolted to her mom's room. She climbed the stairs and opened the first door on her right. Her grandfather was right when he said he wasn't one for upgrading. The room looked untouched. Hanna's old bed was pushed against the left wall with a pink comforter, pink pillows and different stuffed animals scattered. Alyssa walked up to the armoire, on the opposite wall, but it was empty. The girl moved to the window. Many pictures of Hanna and her family and friends were in wooden frames. One stood out to her. In the middle was a picture of a smiling Hanna and Scott.
