Derek sat impatiently along with other extremely agitated individuals waiting and waiting for their update on their loved one. Many were either bouncing their leg up and down or chewing off their nails. A doctor in scrubs approached, and Morgan stood instantly. The doctor was a tall woman with short blonde hair and soft brown eyes. She led the worried agent down the hall to Alyssa, whose face shimmered in the light from her sweat. She had an oxygen mask pressed against her face. Derek rushed to her side and pulled her close, hoping she had forgiven him. The girl didn't pull away, nor did she respond to him. Her anger had withered she was still, however, left in shock by Derek's words. Those words really tore right through her. He let her go and looked at her. She didn't move a muscle.
"I'm sorry," he said to her, pulling up a chair beside her.
"I'm sorry too," she said, removing her mask from her face
"You have nothing to apologize for," Derek assured her
"Yes, I do. You were right about Alison, I should have been nicer towards her, and I will from now on"
"I'm glad. What happened today?" he asked, the question that had been troubling him
"I don't know, no one's told me anything. I went to the store closet to grab something, and then all of a sudden, the door locked, and the room started to fill with smoke."
Alyssa's doctor entered the room at exactly the right time. After taking notes on Alyssa's health, she hooked the clipboard onto the hospital bed.
"Alyssa, do you remember what happened. How did you get here?" she asked. Alyssa explained all that she could remember and asked her what had happened. "A trash can near the closet you were found in set on fire from cigarette, it was accident and nothing major with barely any fire damage. But the smoke got into the store closet, and because the room was so small, that's how it seemed worse than it actually was."
Both Derek and Alyssa were stunned by the news. It made sense, but Alyssa was convinced it was a whole lot worse than it actually was. From the amount of smoke, it seemed the whole school was on fire.
"What about the door?" Alyssa asked. How did the lock by itself?
"What do you mean?" The doctor seemed genuinely confused
"It was locked, I couldn't get out,"
"The door wasn't locked when the firefighters found you, Alyssa."
"What?" she said. Alyssa was certain it was locked. She was trapped in there. "That makes no sense."
"I'll go double check for you." The doctor walked away, leaving the girl to question everything. It must've been locked. Derek looked concerned about the whole conversation. Did someone really lock Alyssa in there.
"Are you sure it was locked, Alyssa?" Morgan questioned
"Yes, it was! It was!"
"OK, I believe you,"
A few moments later, the doctor returned. She explained what she had already told the girl. As far as they knew, the door wasn't locked. But that made sense to Alyssa. She knew the door was locked.
