How Do You Love

Momma never taught me how to love
Daddy never taught me how to feel
Momma never taught me how to touch
Daddy never showed me how to heal
My mom wasn't a good example
Daddy never touched mommas hand
Daddy found everything hard to handle
He never stood up like a man
Conversation never flowed
Yet they had two kids
They barely looked at each other
It wasn't a good life to live

We all walk around
Broken
Emotionally frozen
We get it on
We get it all wrong

How do you love someone without getting hurt
How do you love someone without digging up all the dirt
My life always has clouds blocking my sun
I don't know how to love
How to love
Someone
I ask
How do you love
How do you love
Someone

I was the 'perfect' child
The valedictorian
They told me I'd never achieve
But achievement is my middle name

Daddy was never home
Momma was overworked
Daddy never came to a game
And momma only complained

I've walked alone
Hoping
Begging
Barely coping
We get it on
We get it all wrong

How do you love someone without getting hurt
How do you love someone without crawling through the dirt
In my life I have clouds blocking the sun
I don't know how to love
How to love
Someone
I ask
How do you love
How do you love
Someone

It's hard to talk
Says what's buried deep inside
It's hard to tell the truth
When your whole life you were told to lie
Daddy never told the truth
Momma would always cry
Daddy says it was okay
Momma always said she was fine

How do you love someone without getting hurt
How do you love someone without crawling through the dirt
In my life I have clouds blocking the sun
I don't know how to love
How to love
Someone
I ask
How do you love
How do you love
Someone

How do you have a relationship
How do you make it last
How do you love someone
Without dwelling on your past
In my life I have clouds blocking the sun
I don't know how to love
How to love
Someone
I ask
How do you love
How do you love
Someone
