*Thalia's POV*
Uggh! I am so stupid! Why did I have to go and ruin a perfectly good friendship with a kiss that means nothing?!
Only... it meant everything to me.
I would never leave the Hunters, but then, why did I like it so much? I don't know. I'm so confused! And technically I'm not a Hunter anymore- No. I can't feel that way... can I? I'm going back to being a Hunter in June, so it didn't matter.
I spent all of lunch and dinner lost in my thoughts. I just wanted things to go back to normal between me and Reyna. Could they ever after what I'd done? At midnight, I was still up. I walked out of the dorm, confused. In the Common Room, I plopped down on one of the couches, remembering the time in September when Hermione had come to watch a movie and me and Reyna had squeezed onto one chair. It was uncomfortable, and yet, I didn't mind. Is it possible that was only 3 months ago? I buried my head in my hands.
I couldn't be like this tomorrow. I had to cheer Nico on at the lake, whatever the challenge was. It would be twice as hard for him to be in the water, being a child of Hades and all. Not impossible. Just hard.
"Hey," said a familiar voice that sent my heart fluttering. Wait, what? I didn't just say that...
I looked up to see Reyna standing in front of me.
"Why are you talking to me?" I asked. "If you're here to yell at me for what happened earlier, save your breath. It was wrong, I know, and I'm sorry. Just please don't make a scene. I don't want everyone to hear."
"What are you talking about?" She asked. "I'm not here to yell at you. I couldn't sleep is all."
"Oh," I said. "Sorry." I patted the seat next to me. Reyna sat down.
"What did you mean by 'it was wrong'?" She asked.
"Just that I feel bad for kissing you. I'm a Hunter, and you... well I'm a Hunter and I can't like anyone because I'll get in trouble and get kicked out and I know I'm already practically kicked out but I'm going to get back in... I hope... and-" I said in one breath. Reyna cut me off.
"There's nothing to feel bad about," she said. "In all honesty, I kind of liked it." She blushed furious red. I had never seen Reyna blush. I don't think she ever had before, really.
"Y-you what?" I said.
"Yeah," she chuckled. "My brain... after it could function right, that is... thought it was a little like that song Cake. Only there is no break-up and I do not think of you as 'a piece of meat.'"
"Huh. I've never heard Cake," I said. I'm more into Green Day, personally. "But I've been thinking. Maybe you want to go to the Yule Ball with me in two weeks?" Reyna stared at me blankly. "It's okay if you don't. I shouldn't have asked," I added quickly.
"No, no, I want to go, but what about you being a Hunter?" she said. "I don't want to get you in trouble or anything."
"Not technically a Hunter now, am I?" I asked. It still hurt that I had been removed while I was here, but I didn't care. If I was going to the Yule Ball with Reyna, I really didn't care.
"Okay. Let's do it," she said. Behind us, there was a squealing. My little brother Jason was on the floor behind the couch. .
"How long have you been standing there?" I asked.
"Long enough," he said with a mischievous smirk. "So you two, huh? You've got a girlfriend!"
"Say a word and I strike you with lightning," I said. "I don't care that Father wouldn't normally hit you I can manipulate the Mist."
"Okay okay," he said, holding his hands up. "I won't tell anyone! Sheesh... but people are going to see you at the Yule Ball. Won't they know then?"
"Leave that to me," I said with a grin.
*Nico's POV*
I couldn't sleep. I had made a plan with Percy to survive in the lake (he had asked Poseidon not to drown me for the time I was in the lake), but I wasn't sure what I was doing in there. The students who's seen the last tournament 4 years ago had been sworn to secrecy with the Unbreakable Vow, so getting them to tell me wouldn't work. And Hazel had promised to help me, but I couldn't find her anywhere.
I saw Jason go to the Common Room, and I did the same. I saw him duck behind the couch where Thalia and Reyna were, and I hid in the shadows to eavesdrop. After Jason left, I walked out, smirking.
"Soooo..." I said, "you two and the Yule Ball?"
"Shut up!" Reyna said, face red.
The next day, the second task began. We had to dive into the lake to retrieve the thing we would miss most. On the starting whistle, all three of us dove.
Despite my thing against bodies of water and pools, I'm a pretty fast swimmer. I easily duck around the clawed creatures, (grindylows, I think) and soon, I came upon a sight that made my blood go cold.
At the bottom of the lake, wrapped in vines, and frozen, were people.
The first was a boy of about 3 with black hair. Isabelle Rey's little brother maybe? The next was a girl I recognized. I had seen her around Camp Halfblood. I didn't know her all too well, just seen her around. It was Piper who would know her. The girl was Valentina Diaz from the Aphrodite cabin. She was wearing what looked like a school uniform for... Ilvermorny. Huh. I wondered how Valentina had gotten into a school for magic and why she hadn't spoken to Piper at all if she had been here all along with Ilvermorny. She was probably Marcus Smith's girlfriend. I also wondered what her, and the 3 year old boy for that matter, were doing here. But the questions left when I saw a girl with dark skin and curly cinnamon colored hair.
It was Hazel.
I had to get her out of here. I didn't know what I was supposed to find but I didn't care if I lost the Task. My sister came first.
I grabbed her by the waist and cut her free with a piece of glass I found on the bottom of the lake and I kicked us both to the surface. When we were at the top, Hazel woke up gasping and flailing around. I noticed nobody else was back yet.
"What are we doing down here?" She asked, fear in her voice. "Why are we in the lake?"
"T-the Second Task," I said. Everyone had crowded around us now. "'Rescue the thing you'd miss most'."
"And you would miss me more than Will?" She asked me.
"Yeah. You're my sister. Family always comes first," I said, pulling her into a hug. She was shocked.
So was I. Since when do I hug people?
But she returned the hug anyway. She pulled away after a second.
"You do know who I am, right?" She asked.
"Yeah," I said. "Hazel Levesque. My little sister."
"Just checking," She said.
It turned out, I had won the task for being first. So I would have to go into the third task first. And it terrified me.
But, there was still the Yule Ball to get through. I asked Will the next day and between me, Will, Thalia, and Reyna, we worked out a plan so neither couple would get attention.
