It was a fierce battle. Fire, darkness, and dust all around. But the amount of bloodshed was worse. Souls on both sides fought for their lives. However, it was the innocents that were slain and those that shouldn't have been on the field that tugged at people's hearts. Occasionally, some found themselves at one's ankles, either bleeding out too quickly or just reaching up to their own, natural height like half of the world tended to do. One of whom that dealt with both was an unexpected maiden that was said to have been under the strongest protection from the chaos. Said, but that proved to be false.
Only two other people in the entire kingdom were assigned more guarding than her, yet here she was, on her own. Whether she was fighting or fleeing, it was too chaotic to tell. But her bloodsoaked body, having fallen in the midst of it all, was all that was important. It - she - was important and iconic enough for a certain soldier to make her out in the distance and trudge to the terror to fulfill his duty, the one to which she swore himself many moons ago. He was reared to be the princess' shield, and despite her obviously going against the wishes and guards of her sovereign parents, a shield he stayed.
