"What now?" Sara says.
"Mrs. Grimm wanted me to give you this." I say, sighing, throwing my schoolbag on the floor and slumping down on the seat in front of her desk.
"I told you you'd be late." she says, typing on her keyboard.
"I wasn't late the bell had just rung!"
"Mrs. Grimm?" Sara says quietly.
"Mhmm."
She nods and continues typing.
"Is Jessy in your Chemistry class this year?" Sara asks.
"No, she took Physics this year." I say sadly.
"Shame."
"Can I have the absent list so I can sign it and get back to class?" I say impatiently.
Sara looks up at me from behind her designer glasses, they're probably so thin she doesn't even need them.
"What are you so impatient about? I thought you hated Chemistry." she says, opening a drawer and taking the list out.
"I do." I say quickly, shifting in my seat.
She opens up today's date and gives the list to me. I quickly scribble my name and stand up.
Sara takes the paper and quints at it. "Nice signature. Who's Elzabeh?"
"Shut up," I say, picking up my bag and making my way out the door.
I hear Sara laugh and say, "Have a nice day!"
I reply with a short, "You too." and a wave without looking back.
I run back to class. I swear I've done enough P.E to last the week but unfortunately I have it after Chemistry, with possibly the worst teacher imaginable.
When I walk into the class, everyone is sat in the dark, watching the small TV screen at the front of the class. It's an old video tape on the atomic structure that Mrs. Grimm puts on every first day at school, thinking she's being generous but we only end up falling asleep. Which isn't so bad, I guess.
My spot beside the window is taken, so I slide down in an empty seat at the back. I scan the class, hoping to see the new boy, but I can't see a thing.
"I want you all to take notes on this, I think I'm being very kind letting you watch this so don't let me think you're not learning from it." Mrs. Grimm says when she looks up from her book.
Eveyone groans and gets out their text books and pencil cases. I get out my text book and new pen and start doodling on the first page.
The person on the table beside me sighs heavily and when I look over, it's the new boy. He's searching in his white MCM backpack for something he can't find.
I reach over and tap his shoulder and his head shoots up from inside his backpack.
"Here," I whisper, handing him my pen.
The corners of his mouth turn up into a faint smile and it literally sweetens the very air in my lungs.
"Thanks," he says, taking it. I watch him stare at the screen for a while and then he starts writing in his textbook.
He looks back over at me and smiles again.
He needs to stop smiling. I can't handle this. Or maybe I should stop looking...
"Hey, haven't you got a pen now?" he whispers.
I shrug. "It's okay, I've watched it loads of times. I practically know the documentarian's script by heart."
The boy chuckles and nods then gets back to writing.
I pretend to pay attention to the TV screen most of the time, but I can't help but occasionally peek at the boy through the screen of my hair. The tip of his tongue is poking out at the corner of his mouth as he concentrates on his work. So cute.
I try to relax and sit back in my chair, I start playing with my hair, twirling it around my finger and when I look at him from the corner of my eye, I catch him looking at me. He smiles and we both look away.
I think I might start liking Chemistry.
