In the same week that Grandpa passed away, his funeral was held privately at Windsor just five days before Christmas. It was the Friday, after he had died on the Monday, but the entire week had flown by. We spent Tuesday and most of Wednesday in London still, before Mom, Dad, Poppy, Holly, Alfie, Sam and I all drove up to Windsor on Wednesday evening. Mama was in pieces still, but I don't think that she liked to let anyone see that. On Thursday, Mom and Dad spent the day over in the main building with Grandad, and some other members of the family. The girls, Alfie, Sam and I stayed over at the house. Sam and I had the option to go, but I choose looking after Alfie and the twins over standing around talking to people about death. I hated doing stuff like that, and there was already enough of that going on tomorrow.
Mom and Dad left just after breakfast on Thursday morning. Sam and I had discussed what to do. We weren't really supposed to go out. The whole family were in mourning, so if we were to be seen out in public, it would sort of be going against that. We had to take the dogs for a walk, and the girls always enjoyed that, but apart from that, we didn't have much planned. The girls were both pretty exhausted. Since we got back from Holland, there had been a lot of early mornings and late nights, with a lot of formalities and traditions that needed to be carried out.
After we had all finished breakfast, I took Alfie upstairs and put him down for his nap, before returning to the living room, where the girls and Sam were sat on the sofa, watching a film. I sat down on the sofa and Holly moved to snuggle in next to me. We stayed like this, the four of us in our pyjamas until the film had finished. Then when it did, Sam went to get dressed and I took the girls upstairs to do the same. I changed them into a pair of jeans and a jumper, before going into Alfie's room to get him as he had just woken up.
I got him up and dressed before going back downstairs with the girls and leaving them and Alfie with Sam, while I went to get dressed. I changed into a pair of jeans and a hoodie before going downstairs and getting the girls and Alfie ready to go for a walk.
We walked around the grounds of Windsor Castle for almost two hours. It was very quiet and even though it was cold outside, we were wrapped up very warm. The girls ran through the woods and jumped off logs and climbed up trees, both Sam and I taking it in turns to push Alfie's pushchair, while the other played with the girls. We then returned to the house and I warmed up some soup for us to have for lunch, while Sam got the girls out of their warm clothes and set the table.
For the rest of the afternoon, the five of us chilled out, with at least one of us having a nap on the sofa at some point in the afternoon. Mom and Dad got home at around five. They both changed and then came and joined us on the sofa for a while before Dad disappeared to the kitchen to make dinner. I could tell that even though he wasn't showing it, he was really upset about loosing Grandpa. He had told me the other day, when I had shown him my letter for my blog, but I know at the same time he was trying to hold it in, because he didn't want to show anyone he was upset. I got up from the sofa and went into the kitchen.
"Do you want any help?" I asked Dad as I sat down on one of the bar stools opposite where he was stood.
"I think I'm alright thanks Dais." he said, looking up and smiling at me.
"What about with Grandpa? Are you alright with that?" I asked him. He stopped cutting the vegetables on the board in front of him. He put the knife down and then looked at me.
"How do you know?" he asked.
"Because, I miss him too, and I didn't even know him for as long as you did. He wasn't blood related to me and he did a lot for me, so if I miss him, then you must Dad." I told him. He smiled.
"Come here." he said as he walked around the island and gave me a hug. He pulled away before looking at me and saying,
"Put your shoes on, I want to show you something." he said, going around to the hob and switching it, before going into the living room, while I went to put on my shoes. "I'm just taking Dais to get something." I heard him say as I sat at the bottom of the stairs putting on my trainers. He joined me in the hallway and put on his shoes before the two of us went out of the front door and got in the car. We drove around the Frogmore House, just a couple of minutes drive away. Dad stopped the car at the side of the building and stopped the engine. I opened my door and got out. It was cold, but I followed Dad around to the front steps of the building. We both sat down, before Dad began to speak,
