Somewhere deep underground, dark things were happening.

In the dim light of the large basement, the person clicked furiously at the computer, muttering a flurry of words to themself. Their fingers flew across the keyboard, eyes boring holes into the screen.

"Argh!" They cried out, slapping the flimsy plastic desk. It shook under the impact.

"What's going on down there?" A gruff voice growled, and a ray of murky, dusty, light fell onto the staircase at the back of the basement. A pair of feet made their way down the rusty metal stairs, each step closer making the person sit up straighter and tenser in front of the computer. "I hope you're doing your job properly. Do you want another night upstairs? We had a lot of fun last time, didn't we?"

The young boy at the computer froze when a hand clamped down on his shoulder. He focused hard on the glare of the computer screen, and moved one trembling hand back onto the mouse. "It's complete." He whispered.

The other man chuckled darkly, sending chills down the other boy's neck. A bead of sweat rolled down his face, and his whole body was slowly starting to burn up with fear. With the hand that wasn't on the mouse, he quietly reached down and grabbed tightly onto the hem of his shirt. It was a nervous habit.

"Very good. I will see to it that you get safely back home tomorrow morning. Your parents must be worried." His rough and grimy hands caressed the boys face, and the younger had to resist the urge to flinch away. He must. For the protection of the family he loved so much. His mother, his father, his brother. If he was good for one more day, he would get to see them again, and they would all be safe. He would pull through. He had to.

"My my, I'll miss having you here, to be honest," The other man said. "Now go back to your room. I will take care of things from here."

Without speaking, the younger boy stood up, thankful that his part was over, and walked shakily up the stairs, his shallow breath echoing in the silence of the musty basement. And then he was out. In a bedroom. He shivered and shook his head. Now's not the time to be remembering things like that; I have to get my head cleared and calm in case he tries to pull anything on me before I leave tomorrow.  As quickly and quietly as possible, he made his way out of the fancy bedroom, and into his own, which was just as fancy. If it wasn't for the true reason why he was living here, he would be glad to live here forever.

Sighing, he closed the door, and leaned his forehead against the wall, closing his eyes, and taking a few deep breaths. This would be over tomorrow. Finally.

He spent the remaining hours of the night tidying himself and the room up, excited but nervous at the prospect of seeing his family again.

It was only when he laid down and closed his eyes that the magnitude of what he had just done crashed down onto him, and in the deafening silence of the dark room, the boy started to cry.

  What have I done?
