Carrington Hill
The next time I woke up, I was alone in bed. I didn't remember Mia ever coming back or leaving, for all I knew, she probably didn't even sleep next to me. Then again, I didn't quite know where else she would have slept because I knew she didn't like the bed in the guest room and she was not the type of person to sleep on the sofa if she didn't have to.
I was tired and had no motivation to get out of bed. My bladder felt full and my stomach hurt from holding my pee in but getting out of bed sounded like the worst thing ever. I dragged it out for as long as I could, I went on my phone which magically appeared next to me, fully charged. That kind of confirmed that Mia did sleep here last night.
Once I got out of bed to use the loo, I was quick to get back under the warmth I had to leave. Just as I got comfortable, the door to the bedroom opened and revealed my best friend. She had two tubs of ice cream in her hands and two spoons. As she came in, I saw that one was brownie flavoured and the other was cookie dough. She passed me the latter and I grinned softly at the gesture.
"Good morning," she smiled at me and I huffed as I picked the lid off of the Ben & Jerry's. "Thought you'd like this more than toast."
"You would be correct," I said as I stuck my spoon in the cold dessert and placed it in my mouth. It felt amazing and seemed to get rid of all my thoughts. It was like my mind only focused on the sweet taste of the vanilla ice cream and chocolate chip bits that were mixed into the cookie dough balls. "Are you off work today?"
"Yeah," she told me as she got some ice cream on her spoon. "I would have taken the day off, anyway. Being with you is more important than work."
"At least you think that."
"And that's all you need, hun," she winked at me and it caused me to giggle a little. "So, tell me. How's Alex?"
"Um, I'm not sure," I replied. "I haven't talked to him in a few days. He was fine the last time we saw each other," Mia hummed as I explained.
"Oh, you'll never guess who might be my next client!"
"Surprise me."
"Remember Lydia from our street? When we used to live at uni?" she asked and I nodded. She was kind of a bitch at the time. "Well, I wasn't sure if I recognised the name but then I thought about it and realised that it is indeed her. I can't believe she's getting married."
"That's a surprise," I huffed.
"I live for your enthusiasm," she commented sarcastically.
"Sorry I'm just... I can't stop thinking about what happened," I sighed. "I know you are trying to take my mind off of things, and I appreciate that a lot, but it's not working. Which isn't your fault. But I would rather you not do it because it's just pissing me off."
"Oh," she breathed. "Sorry, darl. I-I can go and leave you alone for a bit?" she offered.
"I think that would be best," I nodded. "Just for a while. I need to get my head around this whole... situation, you know."
"Of course. I'm glad you know what you want," she smiled at me and stroked my arm a little. "Do you want me to take your ice cream back down?"
"Please," I said as I placed the lid back on. "I really do appreciate all that you are doing, you know that, right?"
"Of course, you are. You best be," she joked and I chuckled. Mia was so great. She didn't treat me differently because of what happened. Well, maybe a little bit. She was extra caring but that was her.
