I hear the words that come out of  Adam's mouth, but I don't comprehend them. The feds? Sadie? He's got to be out of his mind because there is no way...

My chest tightens as it all starts to sink in. Her sudden, unexplained return. Taking the job at the bar. Sadie was in the room that day when my dad asked us to move stuff to Sampson Hill. She would have heard everything. But she wouldn't betray us like that, would she?

Clenching my jaw, I try to calm myself down before I do something stupid. "What kind of deal?"

Sadie drops her head in shame, covering her face with her hands and refusing to even look at me. There's no way in hell I'm going to let her get away with that, though, so I grab her chin and force her eyes up. "I asked you a question."

"They made her agree to feed them information about you in exchange for our lives." Adam comes to his sister's defense. "If she hadn't agreed, we'd both be dead by now. These guys don't play around, Brandon."

Even though he's the only one actually giving me answers, I'm not interested in what Adam has to say. I want to hear it from her. I want to hear straight from Sadie's own mouth that she betrayed us.

"The raid on Sampson hill, that was you, wasn't it?" My poisonous glare lands on her.

Her lip quivers, and then she gives me a soft nod. "I'm so sorry, Brandon. I swear that's all I told him."

I let out a sharp laugh. "And I'm supposed to believe that?"

"This is my fault." Adam quickly jumps up. "I got involved with a guy back home in Denver, and I was helping him push coke. Sadie found it and was just trying to take it back to him, but they busted her for possession. This asshole cop named Herrera threatened both of us. She didn't have a choice, Brandon, I swear. This is all my fault. If you're going to be pissed at somebody, be pissed at me."

"Trust me, I'll deal with you later." I glare at him. "Right now, I'm talking to your sister. And it's about damn time she's honest with me."

Adam clamps his mouth shut, glancing back-and-forth between me and Sadie. I can see the concern in his eye, wondering if I might hurt her, but he knows me better than that.

I should have guessed Herrera would be behind this. He has no fucking clue who he's messing with. And to use Sadie against me? This motherfucker knows no limits. RIght now, I'm not sure who I'm more upset with–Herrera, for coming at me with such a low blow, Adam, for getting involved with a supplier and involving his sister in it in the first place, or Sadie, for not coming to immediately. That's what stings the worst. She had to have known I would've helped her. That she didn't need to play Herrera's games. No matter what, I would have bailed her out of whatever mess they had going, and she still agreed to this. Does she really think so little of me?

"Tell me exactly what Herrera wanted you to do." It's the fight of my life to keep my emotions in check.

Sadie swallows hard. "He wanted me to work at the bar and wear a wire to try to get information. And when that didn't work, he wanted me to get close to you so you'd tell me things about the business."
