By the time I get to the office, my head is about to blow off. I had settled a little after last night, but Sadie's revelation is a complete shock to my system. I've hardly been able to pull myself together to tell Alex and my father what I'd discovered this morning. Especially after no sleep the night before.
"Sadie's sure about this?" My dad's face is emotionless as he stares down at the picture, finger trailing over the tattoo in question.
"She's positive." I glance at Alex. "We can't exactly check the body because we burned it at the ranch, but it all makes sense. That's why the drugs in Sadie's case are missing. Herrera gave them back to Rivas. They're working together. That's how Herrera got connected with Gomez in the first place—Rivas is a shot caller for the Surenos and Gomez is his enforcer." Gomez didn't admit to that, but we really didn't give him the opportunity to.
Alex crosses his arms over his chest. "So Herrera watches Sadie and Adam for years, enlists Rivas to recruit Adam, and then what? Waits and hopes someone makes a mistake? This doesn't add up. There's no way he can have known Adam will screw up and Sadie will return the drugs and then agree to work with him. There's too many variables there."
"I agree." My dad stiffens. "There has to be more to this. And accusing an FBI agent of this level of corruption is a slippery slope. I'm not doubting Sadie, but I think we need something concrete before we act on this. If we're right, that means Herrera's reach is bigger than we imagined."
"So what do we do?"
He shrugs. "You're in charge here, Brandon. You tell us."
I suck in a sharp breath and nod. The pressure is insurmountable. "Let's send some guys to follow Herrera. See who he meets with for the next few days. If he's working with someone, he'll want to set something up since he knows Sadie rolled over on him."
Alex nods. "Adam and Ro?"
"No." I shake my head. "I don't want Adam on this. Not until he learns his place."
"Well, I don't feel comfortable sending Dante until we know what his deal is, and Jav is on security for Sadie. Adam is pretty much our only other option if you want to keep this closed circle." Alex says.
I rub my forehead. He's right. I don't have much choice right now, and keeping a lid on this information is my top priority. At least Adam can understand the importance of that. He'd want to help us put an end to whoever hurt Sadie.
"Fine, but tell Ro not to let him do anything stupid. They're on surveillance, that's it." I snarl, praying I'm not making the wrong choice.
"I got it. I'll get them there now." Alex jumps on his phone and starts barking out orders.
"Brandon," My dad says quietly. "This concerns me. Herrera is escalating. I think you and Sadie should lay low for a little while. At least until we know what we're dealing with." My dad is rattled, but he's trying not to show it. It isn't often we're caught so off guard and it makes everyone a little hesitant.
