"So I'll keep pestering my contact, but as of now, no charges have been filed against Herrera in association with the shooting, and he's still employed." My dad sighs, scratching his head.

"How the hell can no charges be filed in an officer involved shooting where there's a death? Or at least an investigation?" Alex scowls. "Maybe we should have Sadie file a wrongful death suit with the department. That might move things along."

I shake my head. "It might speed things up but it will only throw gasoline on the Herrera fire. I don't want her involved with antagonizing Herrera anymore. It has to come from us, or from other avenues. He's already got enough of a vendetta against her, and I won't put her in that position."

"I agree." My dad says. "Herrera will bring himself down. It's just a matter of time."

"And in the meantime, we wait?" Alex clenches his jaw, clicking his pen on the table. "You can't tell me you're okay with this. Literally every single day he's still on the streets, he's a threat to your wife. Not to mention all of us."

I grit my teeth. I'm not content just waiting around while Sadie is still in danger, but I also know how delicate this is, which is why I'm heading to Denver. "I'm not waiting around, Alex. That's why I'm heading to Denver this week. I'm going straight to the source–Rivas If Herrera hasn't been booted by the time I'm home, we'll make a move. He is playing by all of their rules when he is worried about getting fired, but now that he knows there are no charges, he might slip up."

"That asshat doesn't care about his job. He is begging to get fired long before this bullshit with Sadie." Alex scoffs.

"What he cares about is protection, which goes away the second he's off the force." My dad says.

Alex burst out laughing. "So he's terrified of us when he doesn't have the backing of the government."

"He should be scared." They haven't even invented all the ways I'll make that man suffer. "I'll be the last face that bastard ever sees."

"Let's just be sure you're making decisions with your head and not your heart here, Brandon." My dad cautions. "There's a lot at stake."

"Are you having regrets about putting me in charge?"

"Of course not." My dad hardens. "I'm just saying, we all know how complicated this is."

"Then don't question my motivation here. I think I know better than anybody what's at stake."

"Watch it, Brandon. You may be in charge, but I'm still your father. And I have every right to second guess your decisions with this. You've made some questionable ones lately."

His words hit me like bullets. "You mean like landing a twenty-two year old kid on his deathbed?"

"Those are your words, Brandon. Not mine." My dad says flatly.
