When I wake up alone in Brandon's bed, I have a moment of panic. I must have fallen asleep and I never saw him come home last night. Did he? I bolt up, noticing that the sheets next to me aren't disturbed at all, like no one slept next to me, and my stomach drops. Reaching for my phone, I realize there aren't any missed calls or messages. It's 6AM. If something happened, someone would have called, right? Unless something happened to all of them.
My mind swirls with nerves, and no matter how I try to talk myself down, I can't. I throw the covers off of my body and rush out into the living room. When my gaze lands on Brandon, my entire body relaxes. He's here. He's okay.
Brandon sits at the table with a cup of coffee, sifting through a stack of papers as if nothing is out of the ordinary, completely unbothered.
"You're here." I squeak out, my voice still hoarse with panic.
He looks up at me, lips curling into a sweet, crooked grin. "Of course I'm here. Where else will I be?"
"I... I don't know." I stuttered. "I just panicked when I woke up alone."
Brandon chuckled, closing the file in front of him. "I'm sorry. It was really late when I got back and you were sleeping so soundly that I didn't want to wake you. I must have really worn you out."
"Yeah," I let out a sharp laugh. He's obviously very proud of himself as I make my way over to the table. He catches my hand before I can sit down and gives me a kiss. "Did you ever come to bed?"
"No." He shakes his head. "Actually, I didn't even get home until just an hour or so ago."
"What? Why?"
"Herrera wanted to search everything. Purposely stalling because he didn't have anything he could actually do, like usual." He scoots his chair out and pulls me onto his lap. "You know, we're really going to have to do something with this anxiety of yours if I'm going to make a mafia wife out of you. You'll make yourself crazy if you jump to the worst-case scenario every time."
"Cut me a little slack." I roll my eyes. "That is my first sting in a while. And it's a lot different when you're married to the boss."
"Jesus, I like the way that sounds."
"So, what? You got home and just decided to get straight back to work?" I ask.
"I just have had something on my mind and I know I won't be able to get anything else done until I figure it out."
"Can I help?" I offer, already knowing what his answer will be.
Brandon shakes his head. "I'm just trying to find out as much about Rivas as I can. Something Adam said the other day....about Rivas searching him out. It just doesn't sit right with me."
"What do you mean?" I frown. "You think he knew Adam is connected to you?"
"I doubt it." He says. "He's halfway across the country and we don't really even work in the same arena. Even if he knew Adam was connected to me, it wouldn't do him any good."
