The scarlet lightsaber flared violently with every vexed breath Kylo took. With each tormented step towards his prey, he trembled.

You had betrayed him, committed against him an unforgivable sin, in his mind anyway. You had done this— he couldn't believe it. You— his light, his wife. And you hated yourself for the way he was looking at you.

"Don't-" your voice cracked, tears streaming down your puffy, inflamed cheeks. "Don't do this, Kylo," you pleaded. You took a step backwards, and you tripped, landing hard on the cold floor. Scrambling away, you screamed, "Please!"

In his eyes, you could see the Light and the Dark fighting for dominance. There was still some small bit of hope and a whole lot of love inside of him, and it was fighting so hard.

You swallowed, your breathing uneven. "I'm sorry that I let the scavenger go. And I'm sorry that I hurt you, Kylo, but Rey would have killed you if you tried to stop her."

The Dark broke through for a moment, forcing him to lunge at you with a powerful strike of his saber. "I'm sorry that I ever married you!"

"You don't mean that. You're not angry at me." You stopped trying to escape him. "You're angry at Rey for leaving us to go back to the Resistance, but now she's gone and I'm the only one left to yell at."

"She's gone because of you," he spat, now standing over you.

"No, she's gone because of you, I just didn't stop her on the way out. You pushed her away when you wouldn't order your forces to stop firing on your family. Your mother was on board those ships. Don't you think this pointless war has cost us enough, my love?" As Kylo fought with himself over your words, the heat of the lightsaber dangling at your side threatened to melt through your flesh.

You sighed a breath of relief when he sheathed that deadly red blade.

Kylo dropped to his knees in front of you, and after you did the same, he wrapped his arms around your shoulders. Kylo began to cry. "I'm sorry. It's been harder to fight it."

"I know, my love." You rested your chin on top of his head, tangling one of your hands in his lawless black curls. With the other, you attempted to soothe him by running your fingertips up and down his spine. "Let me in."

He immediately withdrew from your embrace, wiping his tears away. His cheeks were pink— painted by embarrassment over his emotions. "My mind is an ugly place. I don't want you there."

With the hand in his hair, you pulled him back down, placing his forehead against your own. "When I married you, I vowed to love every part of you, even your demons. Please don't isolate yourself from me because you'll be giving the darkness exactly what it wants. Trust me with the truth enough to help you bear it."

Kylo's lip quivered, but ultimately, he nodded and brought is wide palms to rest over your ears.

You closed your eyes and whispered your request— not forcing him to divulge something he's not comfortable sharing. Never a command, not in his fragile state when anger could so easily be sharpened into violence. "Please, show me what's bothering you."

As he inhaled, breathing in your comforting scent of vanilla and raspberry, the Light won out over the Dark. This battle, at least.
