Alianora knew she wasn't supposed to fall in love. Not only was she bound by the Jedi Code to a life free of distrsctions, but she was also bound by her responsibility as a princess. It was her duty to marry for political gain and the maintenance of an alliance rather than for emotional connection— though, that didn't stop her from loving Anakin Skywalker with all her heart.
"Ali." Padme snapped her fingers, regaining Alianora's attention. She sat on the bed. "Were you listening to me?"
Ever since Padme married Alianora's brother, Anahtris, the two royals had grown closer than ever before. They were best friends, and she trusted Padme more than anyone. Still, she could not share her secret.
"Yes, I was," Ali lied, unwilling to admit defeat. "You said something about... about dresses?"
"About Anakin," Padme corrected, narrowing her eyes.
Alianora stopped all movement as a fiery blush crept to her cheeks. Her heart slammed against her ribcage. "What?"
Padme sighed. "Be honest with me, Ali. Are you seeing him?"
Alianora swallowed. How am I supposed to answer that? Admitting such a thing out loud could get her removed from the Jedi Order and in some serious trouble with her parents. But this was Padme— she wouldn't tell another soul. "I should have told you, but I couldn't risk—" Suddenly, tears spilled from her grey eyes until she sobbed uncontrollably. Everything she let build up since her secret relationship started flooded out of her all at once.
Padme quickly comfort her best friend, wrapping her arms tight around her shoulders to pull her down to sit beside her on the bed. "I understand, Ali. You have too much to lose. It's okay."
The pair of best friends remained in silence until Alianora calmed down, wiping the stains off her inflamed cheeks. Her heart still thundered, though, and continued to do so when Padme asked her next question.
"Do you love him?"
Alianora honestly didn't know how to answer. She knew she loved Anakin, but she'd never said those words out loud. She wasn't sure she was ready to take that step. It terrified her.
She stood up from her bed, remembering the words Anakin spoke to her the other day, when she felt lost about her future and leading her people. Be brave, he told her. Never forget that you are the strongest person I know.
"Yes," she finally answered, smiling. She strolled to the balcony. "Yes, I love him. I can't get enough of him, really. I love that slight smirk on his face whenever I catch him staring at me from across the room. And the way he breaks into laughter when I stick my tongue out at him. I love the feeling of his hair between my fingers and his heartbeat through his shirt. I find him to be the most handsome creature I've ever laid eyes on— including the scar on his face even if he's self-conscious about it. I love his strength and how he can make me feel empowered, like the queen I'm meant to be. I love him." Alianora turned, finished with her speech.
Anakin leaned against the doorframe with that seductive smirk lurking on his cheeks.
"Anakin—"
"You love me?" He rose his eyebrows almost in challenge.
Alianora wasn't going to back down from it, though. So, she raised her chin and pulled her shoulders back. "I love you," she stated confidently.
He chuckled, "I love you, too, Princess."
Some sort of barrier between the lovers had broken down— maybe it was the fear holding them both back from fully giving in.
The raven-haired princess ran toward Anakin,
barreling into his chest. She tightened her arms around his torso, taking in his slightly sweaty scent from training. "Marry me," she breathed. From that moment on, no Jedi Code or royal responsibility could come between Alianora and Anakin. All that mattered was each other.
