~New Year’s Eve~

My mum, Brad, me, Lori and Zayn are crowded around the telly watching the countdown to the new year. My mum even let me have a glass of wine to celebrate. Each of us is holding our glasses waiting for the clock to strike midnight. The anticipation is thick.

“10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1...HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!”

The five of us toast and then drain our glasses. Brad surprises me by grabbing me after I manage to put my glass down. He leans in and kisses me taking my breath away. I can still taste the wine on his lips.

Out of the corner of my eyes I see Zayn, he does not seem too happy. When Brad and I break apart I swear I see hurt in his eyes. When he notices me looking at him he quickly turns to Lori and starts to make out with her.

I feel like breaking the two of them apart and kissing Zayn myself but I remember that there is nothing wrong. I am with Brad and Zayn is with Lori.

A new year means new beginnings and hopefully I can put the mistakes I made last year behind me.

I turn and give a hug to my mum. She is the only one to know about Zayn and me. When I let go I can see the understanding in her blue-green eyes, the same eyes that I share with her and Zachary.

I turn and see that Lori and Zayn are done kissing. I give Lori a hug. I don’t hate her for being with Zayn if anything I hate myself for possibly taking Zayn away from her. Lori is my best friend and I am afraid of losing her if she finds out.

“I am sorry baby I have to get going. I need to be up early for training.”

I turn my attention back to Brad.

“Let me walk you to the door.”

I hold hands with him until we are outside on the porch. I shiver a little from the cold. Brad wraps his arms around me and pulls me into a hug.

“Happy New Year Carls. I love you.”

He leans in and kisses me again. This time I am expecting it. We break apart and I can see both of our breaths.

“Good night Brad.”

“Good night Carls, I’ll call you in the morning. Don’t stay up too late you party animal.”

I give a chuckle.

“I only had one glass of wine.”

He turns and leave. I watch him walk to his car and then I turn to go back into the house. I nearly walk into Lori when I open the door.

“I am sorry Carla but I must get going. Happy New Year.”

She gives me a hug and then walks past me into the cold. I shut the door behind her. I walk back into the living and I see Zayn tidying up the living room. I hear water running upstairs, my mum must be taking a shower and then going to bed.

“You don’t have to do that Zayn. I’ll clean everything up in the morning.”

“I just wanted an excuse to stay behind and talk with you.”

I walk over to the telly and shut it off.

“What is there to talk about? I thought that everyone got caught up on the dinner date.”

I grab the wine glasses off the table and start to walk towards the kitchen. Zayn stands in front of the doorway blocking my path. I force myself to look up into his eyes. As always my knees feel like jelly beneath me but I somehow manage to keep standing.

“I wanted to talk to you alone. This is the first time in ages that I know I can speak with you and only you.”

I try to see if I can somehow push myself past him and get into the kitchen but it looks like he will not budge and I don’t want to drop any of the glasses. I look into his eyes again. I figure that the only way to deal with Zayn is to let him talk.
