Evan's POV
Evan laid in his bed, counting the glow stars on his ceiling. Heidi always said he could count those instead of sheep, but he really couldn't fall asleep tonight.
He sighed, flopping onto his side. He heard the doorbell ring, what? It was the middle of the night, who could it be?
Is it a robber? The FBI?? Are we being abducted by aliens? Or is it Jared? Is it a murderer? What if my mom answers it and she gets stabbed in the heart and then I'm next?!
Before Evan could say anything, he heard Heidi open the door. His mother is going to die!
"Paul!" He heard Heidi greet. "Oh, you didn't have to! It's still so late, Evan is asleep."
Totally asleep here, mom. Don't worry.
"Oh, I'm sorry," he heard a male voice say. "I could go right now. My little son is sleeping over at his best friend's house. I thought I could take you out tonight."
There was a pause.
"Alright, fine," Is his mother agreeing to go out on a date with a murderer?! "Just give me a second to get dressed."
Evan couldn't take it anymore. He sprinted down the stairs and out into the living room.
Heidi and a bard bearded man turned their heads toward him. "Oh, Evan! You're aren't asleep?" Heidi asked.
Evan crossed his arms. "W-who is th-that?" He looked pointedly at the other man.
Heidi looked nervously at him. "Alright, honey, I-I've been dating Paul ('Dating' got autocorrected to 'eating' when I typed in 'Paul') for a few months now. Possibly seven or eight. Paul, this is my boy, Evan."
Evan looked at the man-Paul-astonished and worried. Paul smiled down at the smaller boy.
"It's great to finally meet you, Evan! I'm sorry this is the time you meet me," Paul stuck out a hand. "I'm Paul, you're future father."
Evan pauses when he said that last sentence. His hand was a few inches form Paul's. His future father? As in, a dad? After eleven long years without one, he's having one now? Reliving his own dad?
"Evan, don't worry, the wedding isn't until three months. We're giving you that time to get to know the Heere's," Heidi assured.
Evan blinked at her and shook Paul's hand nervously.
"Now, go back to bed, young man. I have a date to go to," Heidi used gently pushed him in the direction of the stairs. "You already went to one today, so it's my turn."
Evan blushed. "C-Connor and I didn't g-go on a d-d-date! We j-just-just went for ice c-cream!"
Paul chuckled and Heidi rolled her eyes.
Evan glared at the two, still blushing furiously, and went upstairs to his bed.
He definitely couldn't sleep now.

"Okay, first off, what the hell happened to my best friend, second, why do you look so confident, third, what did you say about Heidi?!" Jared rambled.
Evan rolled his eyes. "I d-don't look confident, y-your best f-friend is still alive h-here, and my mom is e-engaged to someone."
