Connor's POV
Evan wasn't at school.
This worried him, a lot. Evan wasn't even responding to his texts. Did something happen?
He took a deep breath. Calm your shit, Connor. Evan is just sick and his phone is broken.
Great excuse, genius.
I'm so glad you agree!
Connor chuckled as the voice began to fade away. He'd been starting to do this every time it came. Because of Evan.
"Hot T-Topic," Jared said behind him. Connor turned his head and looked down at the boy.
"Yes?" He said, monotone. Jared sighed.
"I take it you've noticed Evan isn't here today?" He asked. Connor's eyes widened.
"Do you know why? Is he okay? Is he just sick? Why hasn't he been answering me?" He ranted. Jared held his hand up, shushing him.
"Evan, he uh-" Jared's eyes began to water. "He...he tried to off himself. Fifteen pills." Jared broke down as tears poured.
Connor stared at him as if he was crazy. He was crazy, right? Why would Evan even think about doing that?
Then again, there is a possibility he did. The Insanely Cool Jared Kleinman was fucking crying in front of Connor Murphy. What has this world become?
"No I-I don't believe it!" He cried out. "Take me there. After school. Fucking go over the speed limit if you fucking want, biatch. IS HE ALIVE?!"
Jared nodded, sending relief to Connor. The bell rang. Jared sniffed and said, "See ya, Hot Topic."
~Time Skip~
Connor and Jared ran out their last class as soon as the bell rang. The two jumped into Jared's car and drove off, going a bit over the speed limit.
Once they arrived, Jared grabbed Connor's arm and pulled him down the hall.
He removed them once he knew Connor was following him. They burst through the door.
Connor ran over to the bed where Evan was peacefully sleeping. "Heidi said he woke up late last night. He's just sleeping, don't worry," Jared reassured.
Connor nodded and stared at the boy. "Can we wake him up?" He asked quietly after a while. Jared shrugged.
"It's not like he's unconscious right now. He's only asleep."
"So yes then?"
"Yup."
Connor turned his attention back to Evan and yelled, "EVAN, THEY ARE CUTTING DOWN A TREE!"
The small blonde boy jumped up and almost fell off his bed. "WHAT?!" He shouted.
Connor and Jared started cracking up and were now rolling on the floor, clutching their stomaches as Evan watched in confusion.
After they calmed down, Connor's face turned serious.
"Evan, why did you do that?" He asked. Evan stiffened and looking out the window.
"Fifteen pills, Ev. That's fucking a lot," he added. Evan shifted in his bed.
"I-I wanted it to g-go away," he said quietly. Jared looked around and walked out the room, giving the two boys some privacy.
"For what to go away?" He asked.
"My a-anxiety. I'm always stuttering and I'm s-super weird and awkward. A-And my mom is always st-stressed over work. Sh-she wouldn't need to t-take care of me. I w-wouldn't be a burden to her. I wouldn't d-drag her down with me," Evan choked back a dry sob. "I'm a m-mistake anyway. That's w-what my dad always said. I know h-he left us for a reason. And it was d-definitely because of me. I m-mean, why wouldn't it b-be? I'm so annoying. You and Jared w-would have a better friend. Zoe d-doesn't love me, but I don't r-really care anymore. Alana w-won't have to deal with me. Miguel wouldn't have to b-beat me anymore. I wouldn't be a-annoying him. I wouldn't be m-making him mad. I just...it's p-painful. I want it to just stop. I don't l-like the pain."
Connor watched as Evan sobbed, a few tears falling himself. He pulled Evan into a hug.
"Shh, don't worry. You can't help that you have anxiety. You're not annoying. You're the best thing that's ever happened to your mother, do you know that? You don't know that your dad left because of you. Me and Jared wouldn't want a better friend than you. Alana loves you as a friend just as much as we do," he paused. "Miguel beats you?"
Evan nodded. "It started the f-first day you guys r-reunited. He told me to leave y-you alone. I didn't want to because y-you're my best friend. So h-he just decided to beat me each day instead. That's why I'm w-wearing long sleeves and make up. Covering up bruises are really h-hard, ya know? He took my medicine b-box. I'm s-sorry."
Connor nodded. He was going to have a little 'talk' with Miguel tomorrow. And hen he realized something else Evan said. "You have a crush on my sister?"
"Had," the smaller one correct. "I guess I j-just don't like her anymore now that w-we're friends. I've come t-to get over her very quickly."
Connor sighed. He had no idea why he was so relived because of that.
Just then, a nurse came in. "Evan should rest. He's going to be transferred to psych ward tomorrow," she explained.
Connor gave Evan one last hug before waving goodbye and walking out.
Tonight was his sister's concert.
And he's going to make her know he's always been there.
What could go wrong?
