David's POV
If I had known that my first day as a newsie would have consisted of my 10 year old brother drinking beer and getting chased by some guy with a cane, I would have slept in.
Jack Kelly, my brother Les, and I all dashed around a corner and finally stopped to catch our breaths. We all stood between two brick pillars. I have had it. What was with this guy?
"I'm not runnin' no more." I told him.Jack nodded before looking up and down the streets. He opened the door to the building we were by and pushed us inside.
"I want answers." I demanded. "Who was that guy? Why's that guy chasing you? And what's the refuge?"Jack leaned against the railing of the stairs. He let out a small sigh of annoyance. "The refuge is a jail for kids. That guy chansin' me was Snyder, the warden." Jack says with a hint of sass in his voice
"You were in jail..?" Les asked, seeming confused. Jack nodded. "I was starvin' so's I stole some food."
I scoffed. "Food."
"Yeah. Food" Jack insisted.
"He called you Sullivan."
"Yeah well my name's Kelly. Jack Kelly, think I'm lyin?" Jack got defensive.
"Well you sure have a way of improving the truth." I countered him. "Why's he chasing you."
"'Cause I escaped." Jack put simply.Les got all giddy. "Oh boy! How?" He asked, tugging on jacks sleeve.
"Well this big shot gave me a ride in his carriage."
This guy was unbelievable. "I bet it was the mayor." I said sarcastically with an eye roll.Jack straitened up and looked me in the eye, half glaring. "No, Teddy Roosevelt, ever heard of 'em?"
A voice came from behind Jack, and a beautiful young adult came down the stairs, carrying a large purple feather.
"What are you kids doing here? Go on, shoo."
Jack slowly walked up the stairs, approaching the girl. "You wouldn't kick me out without a kiss goodbye now wouldja Medda?"The woman smiled. "Oh Kelly." She laughed, saying his name and he took her hand, kissing it. "Where ya been kid? Oh, I miss seeing you up in the balcony."
Jack smirked. "Hanging on your every word."
Jack turned to face us and walked down the stairs with Medda. "So Medda. This is David, and les." Jack introduced us. "And this is Miss Medda Larkson, the Swedish meadowlark."Medda takes a bow, ruffling the feather she had in her hand. "Velcome gents." She said with her thick accent. Man she was truly beautiful. She walked over to les and started to talk to him. He put on the whole coughing act, asking her to buy his last paper.
"Oh you are good," She reaches back and touches Jack on the chest. "This kid is very good, speaking as one professional to another I'd say you have a rest future ahead of you."
Jack puts his hands into his pockets. "So Medda, mind if we stay for a while? Just until the little problem outside goes away."
Medda nodded. "Stay as long as you like. Oh, and your sister is about to go on, so walk her home would you dear?"Jack nodded. "She can take care of herself, but I will only 'cause you asked." With that, Medda walked back up the stairs.
Sister? This kid really does have a strange way of improving the truth. I can't imagine what could be related to this guy.
"Sister?" I ask jack as we take our places behind some ropes. Jack looks at me. "Did I forget and leave that part out?" He said to me with a small smile/smirk. I rolled my eyes once again at him and turned to face forward. The lights to the house shut off and an announcer steps into the stage.
"Now gents, the moment you've all been waiting for! Y/n Kelly!"
People around the theater clapped loudly and hollered. Two spotlights came on and there she was. Standing in the middle of the stage with feathers covering her face. Her h/c hair fell down in curls. She began to sing, the most beautiful voice I had ever heard.
