It felt like it'd been so long since Paris, Cairo, the fights, and all the drama. Me and Zara had been seeing a counselor since we came back to the states and we were trying so hard to be all about forgiveness. The way that summer had played out, it was terrifying how things were turning out... But with the help of the counselor for the past 3 months, we've been getting better. Our small world had been coming together way better than we expected.
"Hey Kahli... Yeah girl, me and Zara been getting better and better over the past couple months. I didn't make a mistake marrying this girl. She loves me, I love her, and our happiness is real." Just then, Zara walked into our newly completed apartment on the Lower East Side from the chilly October day. "Hold on Kahli... Hey baby, how was your day at work today?" When I asked her things like that, my marriage to her felt so real. I didn't have to ask, but I always felt like I should.
She leaned in for a kiss, and our lips met. She began to peel away her leather jacket and unbutton her shirt. "Dee... working under someone, I miss it. Running your own company is the hardest thing you could ever do. The bookbag company is BOOMING, it is, but sometimes I'm just TIRED... How was your day ba-"
I held my finger up, put the phone down on the table we stood by, and ran to the bathroom. I fell to my knees, holding my stomach behind the locked door, and vomited. Everything that I had eaten all day was gone, and I felt like my stomach had nothing to fill it all day. I stood up, feeling gross, and brushed my teeth.
"Baby... Are you... OKAY? I could swear I heard you getting sick, but maybe I'm bugging right? Please tell me I'm bugging out." Zara was a damn worry wart when it came to my health. "You're fine right? Tell me you're fine."
"Baby... Calm down." I opened the door as I finished brushing my teeth. "I'm gonna be okay. Maybe it was something I ate... But I'll be o- I'll be o-" The words seemed caught in my throat, and all I once I felt as if I could barely stand. I walked toward Zara, and let go. She caught me, and her first instinct was to panic.
"OH SHIT... FUCK... Dee?! Dee!..." She carried me cradled to her chest, and laid me down on the couch. My vision was fuzzy and I could barely keep my mind running. My mind faded to black, and the last thing I remember hearing is Zara's voice saying "KAHLI. SHUT UP WITH YOUR DAMN GOSSIP. SHE'LL CALL YOU BACK LATER."
I blinked a few times, to Zara and Dr. Julian standing over me. I had been moved by someone to the bed. I moved my hands around in our white fluffy sheets and felt a sense of home and didn't feel so sick anymore.
"So, keep her in a cool climate, at all times. Maybe she can take off from work for the next couple of days, about 4 or 5, and I should have a few answers for you by then."
"HI DR. JULIAN!" I said extremely bubbly, and he jumped just as I knew he would. "How are you today?" Zara looked at me and laughed, shaking her head and covering her face.
"Why are you such a clown babe?... How are you feeling? Do you need anything?" Her smiled quickly turned into a concerned look, and I couldn't help but laugh.
"Zara. There's a doctor standing right next to you, telling you he got this, so don't worry. And I can honestly tell you, I do not feel sick anymore. I do have a headache, but I do not feel sick anymore... Make you feel better?"
Her face was straight, she wasn't happy with my answer. "No, it doesn't. I won't feel better until I know what's wrong. I've already told my CFO that he can assume the position of CEO for the next couple of days. I'm staying by your side, I don't want anything bad happening to you while I'm out, I want to make sure my wife is fine at all times." She interlocked her fingers with mine and bent down to kiss my forehead. "Dr. Julian, you can call my house phone, cellphone, her phone, even text me, as SOON as you find out anything. Please?"
I found it so cute how concerned she was. "Yes ma'am, I'll make sure I have any info back to you as soon as I can. I can see you really care about this girl, so I won't mess around on your info." He laughed and put his hand down on ours. "We're gonna make sure you're okay, promise."
"Thank you Dr. Julian. I really appreciate it."
He smiled. "I'll just take this blood work down t-"
"BLOOD WORK?... Zara. That's your blood right? Who's blood is that? That's a lot of blood... That required a needle. Who had a needle? Damn sure feel sorry for them... Zara who got a needle?!" Her eyes diverted to the vial of blood in Julian's hand, then to me. "Zara. You let that man put a needle in my arm, didn't you?" I looked at my arm and saw a band aid over my vein. "You didddddddd......." I whined.
"Deena, please, shush." I pouted my bottom lip out.
"I will NOT. You know how I fe- Dr. Julian I'm sorry I feel like we just cut you ALLLL the way off, finish what you were saying."
"Yes yes... A few days. I'll be in touch, I promise. We'll have any info you need to know. IF there is any of course, because this could just be a common flu. We'll run some tests, and see how things go." He ended his sentence with a smile. "See me to the door, could you please?" With that, Zara walked him to the door, and I blew her a kiss.
"You worry wart!" She stuck her tongue out at me and laughed. "Stop worrying so much Zara." I smiled and she left the room.
"Deena, what do you want for dinner?" She asked me as she strolled back into the room.
"HMMMMM... I'm not even sure... What about... WENDY'S?" I cheesed. I LOVE Wendy's.
"Let me guess... You want a Jr Bacon and some nuggets and you want a sprite with no ice?" She cheesed back, proud that she knew me so well.
"You got it babes. But I want a frosty too, get me one please!" I pulled out my puppy dog face and it broke her.
"Okay baby, only cuz I love you." She came to kiss me on my forehead. "I'll go get your food. I'll be back. Don't miss me too much." She left, and I ran to my phone.
I dialed Dr. Julian's number and he answered after the first two rings.
"Deena. Hey how are you? Something wrong?"
"No no Dr. Julian everything is just great... But... I wanted to ask you... What symptoms do I have? Like... Besides the flu?"
"If it was just from my opinion... Deena, you're in the early stages of pregnancy. But we'll run the blood and-" His words faded out of my hearing, and I dropped the phone. A tear fell from my eyes, and suddenly I felt nauseous again.
What do I tell Zara?
