I felt so out of place, finally coming home from the hospital. I was entering a home for a family with little toddlers running around, when last time I checked it was just me and my pregnant wife. I had to adjust to being a mom, and quick!
"Mommy... Eat eat... Eat EAT!" Pink screamed from in her room, and soon Blue joined her screaming. I didn't think I'd have enough time to get a complicated dish I was used to preparing ready for them, and I began scanning my brain for what 1 year olds what want.
Sandwiches.
I slowly moved toward the kitchen, and scanned the fridge for the lunch meat. Just as I spotted it, I saw Deena's hand reach over my head. She was fully dressed, and picked out carrots from the fridge.
"I got this babe." I said as I grabbed her hand. She turned around and looked at her hand, and laughed, sliding her arm free from my grasp.
"Oh do you? What were you planning on doing to resolve this issue Zara-Elise?"
"Sandwiches babe. Look at the clock. 12:32! What time is that? Lunch time. What does lunch time mean? Sandwiches." I smiled, proud of my answer.
"Zara... Sandwiches are a Friday lunch. If you looked at the chart on the fridge door... RIGHT there..." She pointed at the door, and there was a dry erase board with days and meals. "You'd know that. Now if you want to help... You can get me a pot, so I can soften these carrots up, and give them to the babies. Cool with you?"
I stood with an attitude written all over my face, but retrieved the pot and said nothing else about it, avoiding an argument.
I walked out of the kitchen, not wanting to "disturb the chart" any further, and decided to let the babies out from behind the gate over their doorway. I held Pink's hand and picked Blue's chubby self up and walked into the living room with them both. I sat them both on the couch, and started up a conversation with them, hoping by some magical force, they'd begin answering me fluently. I wanted to fit so badly into a family that was mine... But I knew it would be hard, missing a WHOLE year of it already being in process.
"Pinky, Pink Rose, how you doing?" I kissed her on her forehead and then pulled her on my lap. Blue soon reached out after her and whined for me to pick him up too. "You too chubby? C'mon pop pop. Come sit with me." I held them close to me, hoping to get as close as I possibly could. I felt so disconnected from my family, and wanted so badly to fall into the flow of things.
What did the babies like to eat? How much sleep did they like? Did the like to sleep in like their Mommy Dee?
"Zazazaaaaa Momma Za..." Blue began babbling to me, and Pink giggled as if though they understood what they were saying amongst themselves, and I couldn't help but laugh at how cute it was.
"Mommy is sorry guys... I'm sorry. I'm so sorry I couldn't be here for you guys how I should've been... I couldn't be here for Mommy Dee how I should've been... I'm sorry. I'm going to try and start to do things right, and we're going to have a perfect family... Okay?"
Pink nodded and laughed and Blue fell out in laughter, following behind his sister. Just then, Dee walked in. "Umm... Why does everyone have the giggles in here?" She came in smiling and I looked her up and down. She looked absolutely sexy with her curly hair in a ponytail, and her simple black t-shirt and pants complimented her nude Christian Louboutins so well, and her red blazer topped it all off...
"Baby... Where you going looking so sexy...? And where's the twin's food?"
"Work dearest... I'm going in to continue this bookbag company you left for me to run... Remember that? Do me a favor," she waved a pair of small black jeans and a small red button up at me. "Put this on Bluesy. And this..." She handed me a little poofy black skirt and black Tshirt with 2 leather jackets on top and 2 pairs of little high top all red vans. "Is Rosie's stuff. Get them ready. Those are their jackets and sneakers. Blue wears the 7, Pink wears the 5, his feet are fat."
"Wait... So where are THEY going?"
"Their food is in their little lunch bag, and you mean where are WE going?... Your clothes are pressed and sitting on the bed babe. You're wearing all black, just how I like you. Put your red Yeezy's on please, and your red flight jacket. We're going to the office baby. Welcome back. C'mon we gotta go."
I looked at her, smirking in astonishment. I found it so sexy how she had everything under control for all 4 of us at the same time. "I'll dress them, and then get dressed babe..." I tied my dreads back, and began dressing the babies. She walked away, all sexy like, and I couldn't help but watch her, as I pulled Pink's shirt down over her head.
"OH... Almost forgot this..." She handed me a black headband. "Put this in Pink's hair, please and thank you."
"No problem babe..." I took the headband. "So baby... They're coming to the office with us?"
"They are. Remember those little assistant's offices that you had connected to either side of your office? I had them renovated. The one on the right side? Baby heaven... Toys galore, play pens for them to nap in, that's their room. Then the smaller one, on the left, I put a small futon in there, for those rare long nights in the office that I had to spend in the office, when Tiffany had to come pick the kids up and watch them, while I worked all night."
"Oh... Babe... I'm sorry I wasn-"
"Zara, please, finish tying up their shoes, and then can you go get dressed so we can go... We have a company to run."
