"Mom, when can I leave!"
"Honey, we've been through this before." She says softly, staring into my gray eyes with her blue ones, "There are dangerous people out there who will exploit you for your abilities."
"I'm fourteen and I can control it! Mother please!"
She opened her mouth to speak, but nothing came out. "Sorry. We just can't risk it." She turned to walk away, leaving me in my room, alone. I groaned and threw my glass statue of a mermaid at the wall, making it smash into a thousand pieces. I didn't feel guilty. It was from my father. His way of saying, "Here's something for your birthday, now go away."
Ladies and gentlemen, my father. The door burst open, revealing my brother, Samuel. "What did you do!" He shouted.
"What's it to you, Sammy." He hated when I called him that.
"Shove off. You're lucky father got you something, but you had to break it."
"Look around Samuel! Everything in here is from mother, except that statue! It makes no difference. It's not my fault he disgusts me and my powers! Not my fault that he worships you! Now get the hell out of my room!"
"Watch your language Amulet." He warned.
"What are you gonna do? Huh? I'm already locked in my room! I already said get the hell out and I'm not gonna say it again!"
He rolled his eyes and walked out, slamming it behind him.
"What the hell did I do to deserve this?" I looked up at the ceiling. "Why was I born like this?"
I flopped down on my bed and pulled out one of my favorite books. Percy Jackson and The Olympians. I put the book back under my pillow after I finished the first five chapters and grabbed my laptop.
I went on Twitter - none of my family knows I have it - and tweeted:
"What do you people do when you're bored and can't go outside?"
I got a bunch of responses like, "The internet."
"Sleep."
"Eat."
"Repeat."
The last one made me giggle a tiny bit. After going on a follow spree I went onto Youtube. "Lady Amulet?" One of the maids, her name Barbara, opened my door.
"Yes Barbara?" I say putting my laptop away.
"Your father wishes to see you, is that alright?
"No." I say, "It is not alright."
"Bu-"
"I said no, now keep him away from me."
"Can I tell you what he wants to say?"
"Fine."
"He wants you to go to school."
I'm pretty sure I jumped at least five feet in the air. After I calmed down I looked at Barbara and say, "He can come in, as long as my mother is with him."
"Yes, M'lady."
She walks out and closes the door. There are faint whispers in the halls l and after what seems like forever, my mother and father walk in.
"Is it true?" I ask them.
"Yes it is, honey." My mom says, "You start tomorrow as that is when summer break is over."
"But," My dad starts, "we have rules."
"Of course you do," I say under my breath, "You always do."
