Chapter 5

When she found the turquoise resting on her pocket, Nephelle wanted to scream in frustration. Despite Vanessa telling her repeatedly that she needed to trust Mabel, the woman didn't seem to follow her own advice.

No matter what she herself had decided, the stone wouldn't stay away from her for long.

The second the two of them had arrived from the village, Mabel had grabbed the stones and promised to hide them. After that, she disappeared into her bedroom and stood there until she left for work.

Glancing at the bags, then, Nephelle found herself following Mabel's steps up the stairs and entered the room she had been given, the second one on the right at the corridor.

The bedroom was large but mostly empty, with only a bed, a bedside table and a chair standing beside it. Everything was made of wood, with beautiful details of lilies carved everywhere she could see, from the old wardrobe by the window to the door in front of the bed that led into a small bathroom. Walking towards the wardrobe, Nephelle opened its door to find it bare except for two changes of clothes she knew to be Mabel's.

Putting away the clothes she had gained from the Owens – which made her slightly uncomfortable, but she hadn't been able to refuse them.

And they were so pretty too.

After caring for her purchases, she closed the door and turned towards the bed. A tiny smile appeared on her lips when she glimpsed the small bundle sitting on the chair stationed by her bed.

Wade had brought her new books.

Feeling an unexplainable warmth fill her heart, Nephelle sat by her bed and caressed the bundle. That had been nice of him.

That had been so nice of all of them... Thanks to the Owens she was now healed, she could smell a delicious scent coming from the kitchen, she was clean, she had new clothes and new books.

They were trying to make her feel accepted. Welcomed.

Feeling grateful, Nephelle decided she needed to do something nice for them as well... To give something back.

Wandering down the stairs, Nephelle took a moment to admire the workmanship of the house she was standing in. Everything seemed to have been carved in wood, a dark wood. There were lively paintings everywhere - some of sunrises, most were of plants and flowers. There were family pictures here and there, small splashes of color livening up the home.

Leaving the stairs, she took a right on the small corridor that led to the kitchen, which was an open space, with huge doors made of glass that led to the back of the house. She knew that, if she went left, she'd enter a beautiful dining room - which she had glimpsed the first time she'd been well enough to leave the room.

From what she'd been able to understand, though, the Owens didn't really eat there.

And she could understand it. The kitchen's table was smaller, but the place was clearly the heart and soul of the Owens' Household.
