Chapter 6
Wade was finishing prepping the wagon when they found him. "I'm just about ready," he said, smiling as he used the back of his right hand to dry his sweat. "You can hop in, ladies."
Glancing with uncertainty towards the step, Nephelle hesitated a little before stumbling her way inside the wagon. Settling herself, she pretended not to hear Mabel's giggle as the girl hopped in after her.
"I'll take a ride with you guys to the village." She explained, squeezing in beside her. "I always do that when Wade takes the wagon, saves me a lot of walking."
With a sigh, Nephelle nodded and turned to look ahead.
There were two horses of a beautiful chestnut color, their coat looking shiny against the sun. Wade was checking something on them when Fox came out of the house.
"Don't forget to tell Mr. Aaron that we should have apples in two weeks or so. They are reaching the point for harvest." Fox warned, stopping to grin at Nephelle. "Have fun, Angelface – tomorrow I'll show you what real work is like."
Wade slapped Fox's shoulder with a bit of more strength than what he probably needed. "You're just jealous you don't get to spend time with her today."
Scowling at his brother, Fox stomped away while Wade laughed at him.
"Have a nice day, big brother!" Mabel shouted after him, laughing harder when he gestured for her to leave him alone.
Wade was still laughing when he hopped on the wagon beside Nephelle, squeezing her inside.
Wade threw a grin at Mabel and Nephelle had a bad feeling as the boy rushed the horses through the hard path.
Squealing before she could help herself, Nephelle glared at the siblings as they fell into easy conversation.
"This doesn't really have a name, but most people here call it 'The Owens' Path'" Wade said, offering her a small grin. "It's pretty straightforward until the gate when we'll need to stop so I can open it. After that, we'll keep going forward until we reach the Main Road, which is the only 'real' road we have."
"By road, he means it's paved with stones," Mabel explained, using her hands to fix Nephelle's hair into a long braid. "The paths are a little more on the rough side."
Frowning, Nephelle looked around and glanced back at Mabel. "This wasn't the way we came from, is it?"
"No, we came from that way." Mabel pointed to their backs. "By the forest and the river. It's the path the leads to Gavril, but even that is too far away from here."
Wade nodded. "Gavril is at least three days away, and that's on horseback and without fog. We tend to do most of our stuff on Airyll, since it's only half an hour or so."
Nephelle's eyes widened. "Mabel mentioned something about the fog..."
"Oh, the fog." Wade's eyes twinkled, though he didn't look away from the road. "People are still half expecting it to come back at any time. Not surprising, you see... It wasn't a climatic thing, that's for sure. I mean, there are records of the fog covering Airyll since the days of the Goldian Wars, and that was hundreds of years ago."
