TRIGGER WARNING:
Some scenes in this chapter show an abusive relationship. I tried to make them light (or as light as I could, since this was a dark theme) but they might still trigger some of you. In case you think this is not for you, I understand!
If you think you are in an abusive relationship - ask for help. There are people you can go to and they'll help you get away and get help- and trust me, things will get better. You are not alone and I'm always here if you wish to talk to someone.
OMG, OMG is this it? Is this it?
It is!! :0
It's the penultimate chapter. Do you know what it means?
IT'S ENDING! /runs around in panic/
Well, I guess I hope I'll see you in the next update (September, 20th) for the grand finale!
Chapter 26
The only light in the room came from the soft lamp on his sister's bedside, which meant his eyes were straining to make out the words in the book he was reading, but Wade was determined not to stop.
The book was a medical compendium that Doc Rick had let him borrow, in the hopes that he could find something in there, anything, that would lead to him being able to save his sister.
He didn't have much hope, but it still felt better than doing nothing.
Rubbing his eyes and taking a deep breath, Wade tried to ignore his exhaustion. He set the book down and slid a hand on his sister's forehead.
She was feverish again.
Getting to his feet, he went to her wardrobe and started searching for a clean towel to use when something caught his attention.
A light, purple glow.
What was this?
Rummaging amongst her clothes, he found the glowing stone hid between her pants – what was his sister doing with it? It looked like Nephy's...
"Give her the stone."
The voice made him jump, but he turned to look at the woman. "Who are you? And how did you get in here?"
"I'm Vanessa, I'm the one who gave your sister that stone – just hand it to her. Trust me."
Biting his lower lip, Wade pondered. He couldn't possibly trust the woman – not with his sister's life, but then again...
Then again, what could have her hold a stone hurt? It didn't look like it was hot enough to burn... And Nephy's stone always helped her...
Touching the stone, Wade discovered it felt warm – as if it had stood on the sun for a while.
Walking over to Mabel, he moved carefully to let the stone touch his sister's skin, his eyes focused on her face. As she seemed to relax so did he, sighing.
"Is this going to heal her?" He winced at the touch of panic in his voice - but then he shrugged it off. At that moment, he didn't care whether he seemed needy or desperate - he just wanted his sister safe. Just that.
"No," her answer was blunt, but Wade appreciated her honesty even as it broke his heart. "It will buy her some time, though." Wade followed Vanessa's gaze outside the window, to the dark night outside. "It should be enough for Nephelle to accomplish her task."
