The next day at school was awkward to say the least.
It began with me trying to get through the day, so we could get to this whole volleyball business. I wasn't necessarily avoiding anybody, just not paying attention on purpose... but to everyone, not anybody in particular.
Then the dreadful time came, fourth hour. I went into the locker rooms and began to change. Adriana came in and started changing beside me.
"Hey! How are you?" she asked and smiled at me.
I quickly looked away, acting like I needed something from my locker to hide my blush. "Hi. Good. You?"
"Umm, I'm good. Today has been so long, and I'm so happy we have lunch after this class." She sighed and finished getting changed. "I have to pee really fast. Wait for me?"
I only nodded and continued to dress myself.
As she went to use the bathroom, I quickly finished changing and filled both of our water bottles. After she had washed and dried her hands, we headed out of the locker room, and I handed her her bottle.
"Oh my gosh thank you!! I completely forgot I was going to need this."
"Yup. Don't stress it." Don't stress it? Who even says that?
We walked side by side out of the gym, behind the rest of the class. The walk to the field was the most uncomfortable thing I had ever experienced. I was silent, but she never gave up on the conversation. She always had something new to add, like she didn't want to stop talking. God, she's so cute.
Today we had to run our mile. Four laps around the track. Four seems like a small number, so easy and simple. So wrong you are if you think any of this is true. Running four laps is one of the hardest things in the world. God I am out of shape.
Normally, I would be complaining about it every step I took. However, Adriana was directly beside me. She could easily outrun me but refused to leave my side. I was thankful and dreaded every second of it.
On one hand, she was just being a good friend, not letting me suffer on my own. On the other, I kept making everything awkward because of my stupid little crush.
Once I finally managed to pull myself together and finish my last lap, I crashed onto the turf beside my water bottle before chugging. Thank fuck that's over.
"Thank fuck that's over," Adriana laughs before sitting beside me, leaning her head on my shoulder. I smile to myself at the fact that she's able to practically read my mind after us knowing each other for such little time.
The last group of people finished their laps more than 5 minutes after us, allowing us plenty of time to catch our breath and gather ourselves before heading back inside.
"Free time, do whatever you want. You've got 30 minutes."
"Practice our serves?" Adriana asked, volleyball already in hand. I let out a chuckle and nodded before joining her as we hit the ball from a distance, each of us catching it and hitting it back to the other.
This went on for about 20 minutes until we were bored of the same moves. She caught the ball and put it under her arm, walking towards me. Shit.
"Are you mad at me? Did I do something? I don't remember doing anything wrong." She paused but it was only momentary. You didn't do anything wrong. That's the problem. How are you so wonderful? It shouldn't be possible. "It must have been Ariana."
Who? Who is Ariana? Why would she have anything to do with you? How does it make sense that she's why I'm mad at you? Although, I'm not actually mad.
"Who?"
"Ariana."
"No no, I got the name. Just, who is Ariana?"
"She's my sister."
"Why would she have anything to do with this?"
"She's my twin."
"Your what? I'm still confused."
"I have a twin."
"How come I've never met her before?"
"I'm really not sure. She's a captain on the team, just like me."
"That still doesn't explain why she would have anything to do with this."
"You're extra slow today, huh? Twins come out looking pretty similar sometimes, if you weren't already aware of that."
I took a second to absorb what she was saying. "Wait, you have an identical twin?"
She nodded slowly. "Finally got there. So, is she why you're off today?"
A memory crossed my mind. The weird look Adriana gave me at tryouts. It wasn't her, it was Ariana. If some random girl I didn't know just randomly waved at me, I probably would have looked at her weirdly too. I saw this as an opportunity to avoid the awkwardness more now, so I took it.
"Yeah, probably. I waved at you and all I got back was a funny and uncomfortable face. It was probably her."
"She can be so in her own world sometimes. She doesn't realize when she's being rude. She doesn't mean it though, I promise," she apologized for her sister.
"Don't worry, I completely understand. If some randomly girl was to act like we were best friends out of nowhere, I'd give her that face too." We both let out a laugh.
I was so glad that I had found a way around the awkward situation I had put myself into. I just wished I could find a way around my crush on my best friend.
