They didn't make it.
They didn't win the World of Dance, and Sean's biggest fear came crashing into him — disappointing Kaycee.
Even though she said it was fine, even though she said she was proud of them for making so far into the competition, he simply couldn't believe — he nodded along but inside he was devastated, angry with himself for not taking them to the end of it.
"Don't worry, Sean." She said, hugging him. "It's not the end of us."
He prayed for it, and he thought the same thing except they began to distance themselves from each other once more — with WOD they had a plausible excuse to be with each other all the time, just like when they were kids and now the excuse was gone, and yes, they were still partners but there wasn't any eminent reason for them to be around each other every single day, and that just pushed them away.
They didn't have any upcoming project, so there was no reason for them to see each other outside classes and meetups with their friends — and neither Sean nor Kaycee knew how to say to each other that they wanted to hang out just because.
"So, you are coming, right?" Asked Julian, noticing Sean wasn't listening. "Man."
"Sorry, what?" He said, focusing on his friend.
"Damn it, Lew, it feels like we are back where all of this started." Said Julian. "She's there on the other side of the room and you're here drooling — actually it's not like it, because at least before you had some balls and actually went out with her."
"Let's not go there," Sean said — they were waiting for class to start, sitting in a corner as Kaycee was on the other side with Bailey. "What you were asking before?"
"My cousin's sweet sixteen. You are coming, right? Josh and Ken are coming too." He explained. "Look, I need for you guys to be there, otherwise I'll have to deal alone with all my relatives asking about Chloe, and I can't go there yet either."
"Of course I'll be there, man, but it's a fancy party? Do I have to wear a suit and tie?" Julian just nodded. "Okay, then you got to find me a suit and tie."
"Alright, I think I have something you can borrow." They laughed. "Oh, and the girls are coming too, you know, Bails, Hani... Kayc."
"I sad we shouldn't go there yet." Said Sean as they stood up.
"Okay, but I think you should take this opportunity to score a date, come on, it's like the closest to a prom we will ever have." He said. "It can't be romantic."
"Forget it, man... I thought maybe we could try again but after leaving the world of dance, we distance ourselves and I don't know if she would want." He said. "I spent months afraid of being with her when she wanted to be with me, she must have gotten tired."
"Maybe." Said Julian. "Or maybe not."
Julian's words stayed put in Sean's mind during the whole class — when leaving the building after class he saw her, sitting on the sidewalk while waiting for her ride and kind of remembered him of that particular they shared an uber. So he decided to take it as a sign.
