Ryan watched as the others followed Brendon's example. First to find what he was looking for was the boy sitting next to Pete -Patrick?- who put a bill and some change in the center of the table.

"I've got 5.64."the boy announced.

"Ten bucks."Pete said adding his money to Patrick's.

"Ooh, someone got his paycheck."Brendon said teasingly,"Eight bucks."he said adding to the small money pile.

"Umm...what are you doing?"Ryan asked awkwardly.

"We're putting all our money togheter, so we can all buy the same value lunch."Pete explained.

"We used to do this in highschool. Cafeteria food sucked there, but thankfully they would let us go off school-grounds during lunch."Brendon continued.

"Sometimes we didn't have enough money or any at all, so that's why we started doing this."Patrick finished.

"Oh..."Ryan said still processing the information,"I've got 6 dollars and 10 cents?"he offered putting said money in the pile.

"Alright, so the grand total is..."Brendon said taking the money and counting them,"29 dollars and 74 cents."he announced.

"26 more cents and we could've bought ice cream too."Pete joked.

"Well, too bad you didn't bring 26 more cents."Brendon teased.

"Oh, shut up, Breadbin. I contributed to the pile more than you."Pete rethored back.

"I had theatre rehersals and you know that!"Brendon protested.

"Guy, stop fighting, please."Patrick said.

"Sorry."the two apologised simultaniously.

"So...uh...what now?"Ryan asked not knowing what got Brendon all fired-up nor what they were supposed to do next with the 29 dollars piled on the table.

"Oh, right!"Brendon said seemingly just remembering what they were taliking about,"Now two of us have to embark into an epic journey to aquire sustenance."Brendon said dramatically.

"We play rock paper scissors to see who has to go and buy food."Pete reiterated what Brendon had just said in a less fanciful way.

----------------------------------------

Ryan and Brendon were the ones who ended up with the task of  buying lunch for their table. Both boys had lost at rock paper scissors, which Ryan expected with the luck he had that far that day, but Brendon's case seemed a bit suspicious. He had lost every time, despite supposedly having done this for at least four years.

"Why did you lose?"Ryan asked the dark haired boy as they sat in the serving-line.

"Bad luck."he shrugged. Ryan could tell he was clearly lying.

"I'm not stupid, Brendon."the boy sighed rolling his eyes.

"You've got attitude. I like it."Brendon said chuckling, but stopped when Ryan threw a sharp glare at him,"Okay, fine. I wanted to spend more time with you."he confessed.

"Why?"the other boy asked suspicious.

"Because the only thing I know about you is your name and major?"he answered ,"You don't seem like you would hurt having some friends eiher."the boy added with a chuckle. Big mistake.

"So what? I'm not a charity case, Brendon! I don't need your pity!"Ryan said irritated raising his voice a notch above his normal tone,"And-and"the boy said stumbeling over his words in frustration,"I have friends! For all you know I could have a lot of friends! They just don't go to this school..."Ryan trailed off.

"Wow, calm down there."Brendon said trying his best to hide his shock. Ryan didn't exactly strike him as somebody who gets fired-up easily, so he must've accidentally struck a nerve.

"I'm sorry, I didn't want to come off that way. I just wanted to...you know what, nevermind. I'll probably fuck this up even more."he said shaking his head,"Truce?"he asked offering a hand to Ryan.

"Whatever, let's just get the food."Ryan answered ignoring the other.

In that moment Brendon knew...he'd fucked up.

During their wait in the serving-line he tried to start a conversation with Ryan at least ten times -almost each time they had to move forwad to keep the cue going- but ultimately failed every time.

He had tried everything from music to books, to movies and even classes, but the boy didn't want any of it, rarely even reacting to whatever bullcrap Brendon was talking about.

"At least let me take you out to a coffee on Saturday to redeem myself."Brendon proposed balancing a tray in each hand.

"We're already roommates, what makes you think I want to spend even more time with you?"Ryan responded lacing his words with poison as he carfully balance his two trays. He was mad at Brendon for that comment and probably going to be for a long time now.

"Ouch. That hurt me right here."he said forgetting what he was doing for a moment and almost dropping the food on the floor.

"Classy."Ryan commented sarcastic.

"At least you're talking to me."he pointed out cheekily, getting an eye-roll in response,"Dammit."he cursed under his breath once Ryan started giving him the cold shoulder once again.

----------------------------------------------

"Finally! What took you so long?"Pete asked as the two boys returned with the food.

"Long cue."Brendon responded flatly not really feeling in the mood to goof around.

Pete looked confused at his older friend; they've always joked around, teasing eachother and all-in-all having harmless fun, but now Brendon didn't seem at all like himself. He was sitting quietly nibbling on his pizza slice disheartened.

It was such a strange sight to see the usually bubbly boy looking so down and mopey, and Pete was starting get seriously concerned. What possibly could've happened?

Patrick must've elbowed the emo boy harder than he intended intended, because the latter had to suppres a groan and threw him a sharp glare instinctively, dropping it almost imediately.

The fedora-wearing boy gave his best friend an apologetic look and nodded to the new boy -Ryan- who was sat on the opposite side of him, wearing a similar expression to Brendon's only ever so slightly more sour.

It took Pete a moment to connect the two dots, but once he did he looked at Patrick questioning. The boy pointed to himself then nodded to Ryan -pausing for a moment making sure Pete was following what he meant- and pointed at the emo haired boy then at Brendon.

Pete nodded in a sign of understanding, quickly finishing his pizza slice.

"Hey, Bren."Pete said catching the older boy's attention,"You have chem next, right?"the boy asked, getting a confused nod in reponse,"I can walk with you if you want. I have physics."he explained.

Brendon paused and thought about it for a moment, shrugging in response and leaving his half-ate pizza on the plate. He got up looking apologetically in Ryans direction hoping the boy would see it and realise he regreted his words from earlier.

Unfortunately, Ryan's spaggetti bowl seemed to be way more interesting than him as the boy stared at the contents intently, poking them with his fork from time to time. With a quiet sigh Brendon slung his book bag over his shoulder and started heading to class followed closely by Pete.
