Ryan put down the book he was reading with a sigh. His philosophy teacher had insisted, since most of the students in his class were minoring in literature, they would be using Dante's Inferno as study material. Meanwhile reading the book isn't impossible to manage in little over a week, Ryan had surely enough fallen behind his classmates posing quite an incovenience in class.
The boy left to the kitchen for a glass of water, but when he returned the book wasn't where he'd left it. He looked around confused, thinking it might've fallen down from the couch when he noticed Brendon sitting in the doorframe that lead to the apartament hallway. The boy was dressed more formally, Ryan had noted, and was reading a small-ish book. It took him a momement before his brain registered that the book his roommate was holding was the same book that had myseteriously vanished from the couch.
"Dante's Inferno, a classic. I prefer The Divine Comedy, though."Brendon said smirking and closing the book as he locked eyes with Ryan.
"Brendon, I'm not in the mood for this."Ryan sighed setting down his glass of water, then walked over to his friend and reached for the book.
"Nuh uh."Brendon shook his head, holding the book out of the other's reach, making him frown,"Ryan you've been cooped up in here all week. That's not healthy."he pointed out,"Look, let me take you out of the house tonight and I promise I'll help you finish the book in time."he proposed.
Ryan crossed his arms and huffed, giving Brendon a skeptical look. It's not that he didn't think that Brendon was smart, it's just that he did tend to do rather unintelligent things at times and didn't necessarily seem academically inclined.
"Oh, come on, Ryan. I've had to memorise twelve page scripts and took AP Literature in high school. Trust me on this one."he said giving him puppy eyes.
"Fine."he gave in,"But if I fail, it's your fault."he said shooting him a joking glare.
"Yes!"Brendon fistbumped the air,"C'mon, let's pick you an outfit."he said excitedly and dragged Ryan to his room.
"What's wrong with what I'm wearing now?"he asked confused.
"Trust me. It'll be ten times better if you do."Brendon answered cryptically as he went trough Ryan's chlotes.
-----------------------------------
As the two headed to the diner, Ryan felt like he was the sixth long lost member of The Beattles; which was arguably a good and bad thing. Brendon had insisted on him wearing wearing a button down and loose black jeans. The boy had also leant him a gray vest, which surprisingly enough fit him perfectly. All hell broke loose, however, when he'd found Ryan's old fedora. Ryan had fought valliantly, but alas Brendon had won once again. He just had a way with words Ryan couldn't put his finger on.As neither of them owned a car they had to walk, getting the ocasional sideye from strangers passing on the street. Brendon, unlike Ryan, seemed oblivious to this. Before leaving the apartament he'd gelled his hair and put on a coat, which made him look like he could easily fit in with anything from Mary Poppins to a 70s romance movie. It looked good on him.
The dark haired boy had lead them to a small diner, tucked away behind a gigantic Starbucks. As soon as they stepped foot inside Ryan understood what Brendon had meant. The walls were a yellowish cream color, which clashed with the red leather booths and bar stools. Waitresses in white and hot pink striped dressed with matching white aprons were milling around to the familiar tunes of Bowie and The Rolling Stones.
"Brendon!"a blonde haired waitress called, sauntering over to the boys,"You know that only employees are supposed to wear uniform."she scolded him jokingly.
"Thought I'd look the part if I was going to come over."he said waving to himself with a content smile.
The girl rolled her eyes, her gaze falling to Ryan,"Hi, I'm Breezy."she introduced herself, sticking out a hand to the boy.
"Ryan."he mumbled quietly and shook her hand, getting a puzzled look in exchange.
"Different Ryan."Brendon waved and Breezy nodded, her smile returning as if it had never left.
The girl nodded the two boys to follow her and lead them to a booth close to the back of the diner, near the jukebox. She the proceeded to materialize two menus out of thin air and place them in front of the two as they sat down.
"I'll be back in a few minutes to take your order."she said nodding the boys goodbye and moving on the other customers.
The boys sat in silence for a few minutes, reading trough the menu. Brendon was the first to speak, setting down his menu on the table and clearing his throat to get his friend's attention.
"Soo...what do you think?"he asked and Ryan could swear he heard the slightest bit nervousness in his voice, but he shrugged it off.
"It's nice."Ryan paused, weighting his words,"You were right."he admitted hoping Brendon knew what he was reffering to.
"See, there's reason to my madness!"the boy laughed and Ryan smiled in return, quietly letting out a breath he didn't even realise he was holding.
He was about to make a snarky comment when a black haired waitress came up to their table.
"Hello, what can I get you-oh, hi, Brendon."she greeted the boy.
"Sarah!"he jumped to his feet and hugged the girl,"I didn't know you worked here!"he beamed happily sitting back down and Ryan couldn't help, but feel a tinge of gelousy.
"Yeah, thought I'd hang out more with my roomie, so I quit my old job and came here. My plan seems to have not worked as intended, though."she chuckled and nodded over to the counter where Breezy was talking with a tall brown haired boy.
"The perils of the job."Brendon joked making her laugh, but leaving Ryan completely in the dark.
"True."she agreed and took a deep breath to stop laughing,"Anyway, what can I get you boys?"she asked taking out a notepad and a pen from the apron pockets.
"Hmmm...I want pancakes."Brendon said with feind thoughtfulness.
"It's six p.m?"Ryan said confused, though he came off more as annoyed.
"It's never too late for pancakes."Brendon shrugged casually.
"Alright, so a stack of pancakes."Sarah repeated and jotted down on the notepad,"How about you?"she asked turning to Ryan.
"Umm...I'll have a chocolate milshake."Ryan mumbled.
"Okay."she jotted down happily,"I'll be back with your order in a bit."she announced putting the pen and pad back in their respective pockets, waving Brendon goodbye and moving on to another table.
Ryan found himself being happy about it. Happy that once again it was only him and Brendon at the table. Alone together.
