Ryan was late. The thought repeated itself over and over again in Brendon's head. Naturally, the boy tried to push it back,- distracting himself by talking with Pete and Patrick- but it would always resurface. He was debating wheter or not he should go and see what held him up for so long when the boy stormed into the cafetaria.
"How?"he demanded slamming a paper sheet on the table, next to Brendon.
He was afraid Ryan was mad, but when he looked at the paper he couldn't believe how wrong he was. Wrote in red ink was the letter 'B' with a minus next to it, both of the simbols inside a clumsy circle.
When Brendon didn't say anything, Ryan explained with a sigh,"On the monday after our study session the professor gave us a surprise test. I don't know how you've managed, but you helped me get a B-. Thanks."he sighed finally seating down.
"Uhh...you're welcome."Brendon answered, still shell shocked.
It must've been pretty obvious because Ryan took a look at him then the other boy at the table and frowned.
"What?"he asked, seeming gunuinely confused.
"Ummm...your reaction was a little-"Pete started, then waved his hands around as if that would explain what he wanted to say.
"-intense."Patrick finally finished his friend's sentence and got a greatful look in exchange.
"Oh."Ryan said quietlly, his expression falling.
"It's okay, though!"Brendon chimed in, accidentally drawing all eyes to him,"It's okay."he repeated quietly, his head hung low in embarassment.
The boys ate in silence for the rest of lunch. Brendon waited for Ryan to finish his lunch and once he was done he stood up, nodding Ryan to follow him.
"Hey!"Patrick pipped in before the two left,"Uhhh...Pete and I were going to see Tyler's gig on Friday. Do you want to tag along?"he asked fidgeting with his fingers.
Brendon hesitated. Yes, Tyler was his friend, but so was Pete. The boy looked dissapointed when Patrick had said the question, but he seem to quickly shrug it off and put on a fake smile.
"You should, it's gonna be fun."Pete added half-heartedly when neither of the boys said anything.
"Wouldn't it be too crowded?"Ryan spoke up, getting a few wierd looks from his friends,"I mean,-"he cleared his throat,"it's a coffee shop, so I don't really see how we could all fit at a table-"he rambeled on before Pete cut him off.
"Joe and Andy aren't going."the black haired boy said flatly,"Work."he added.
"Talking of work-"Brendon started, remembering something,"I just realised I can't go."he concluded, putting on his best disappointed expression.
"What? Why?"Patrick asked and Pete perched his head slightly, clearly thinking the same thing.
"Theatre."he shrugged and the two nodded understanding.
"Ryan?"Patrick turned to his friend.
"Um, not to be mean, but...I don't really have why to go."Ryan explained awkwardly,"Plus! I have a math test on Monday and I should probably study."he added hurriedly.
"You two are no fun."Pete whined jokingly.
"Then we should talk to Frank. See if he'll take us in his club."Brendon joked,"Okay, bye, guys."the boy chuckled and he and Ryan left.
-------------------------------------"Do you really have a math test on Monday?"Brendon asked once they were outside.
Ryan scoffed,"Of course, I do. I wouldn't lie."he paused and glanced at his roommate,"Not like you, anyways."he said, trying his best to be serious, but his own expressions betrayed him and was smiling instead.
Brendon gasped dramatically,"But I didn't lie either!"he mocked offence,"I do have theatre rehersals this Friday since the play we are rehersing for is gonna take place two weeks from now."he explained.
"Oh..."Ryan said quietly and the two continued their walk in silence.
"Hey,"he spoke up, scratching the back of his neck awkwardly,"Uh...Is, um...Is Pete like,uh...Does-does he like, y'know..."Ryan stuttered, not lifting his gaze from the ground.
It took Brendon a while to understand what Ryan meant, but once he did, he couldn't help but be amused.
"You know, you can say 'gay'."Brendon chuckled, making the other boy blush,"But, no. Pete's not gay-"
Ryan's head shot up,"But he likes Patrick."he pointed out confused.
"Yeah."he sighed amused,"But sexuality is not binary, it's a spectum. Pete is most probably either bi or heteroflexible, since Patrick is his first same gender crush."he shrugged casually and Ryan nodded thoughtfully.
Then it occured to him,"Why, is there a problem with that?"Brendon asked trying to sound casual.
Ryan's eyes went wide,"Wha-no!"he stuttered,"It's just-I-they...they don't really teach you this stuff in-in like private and-and-"
"They don't teach this in school."Brendon laughed,"I wish they did. Maybe then there'd be less asshole. But they don't."he added on a more serious note.
"Yeah, I, uh, I figured that much. It's just...private schools, they're-there's just- I don't know."he sighed,"There isn't really a lot of diversity, I guess."he shrugged.
"Oh..."Brendon said realising the magnitude of the issue,"Well, if you want I can give you a basic run down on the different sexualities."he offered.
Ryan shook his head,"Not now. I'm still trying to process all this stuff, sorry."he apologised.
Brendon nodded in understanding and decided to change the subject,"Hey remember when I told you about the guys' band?"he asked him excited.
Ryan looked at him confused for a moment and hesitantly nodded.
"Well, turns out I lost the device I had their songs on, but! The good thing is they're still on MySpace."he said wiggling his eyebrows.
"Wait, they had a MySpace?"Ryan asked perplexed.
"Yeah, everyone had a MySpace back then."Brendon answered.
"I had a friend who didn't."Ryan shrugged.
"Well, he didn't know what he was losi-wait, you said you knew a friend. Does that mean you..."he trailed off with a shit-eating grin.
"Nope. No. Never. Nuh uh."Ryan denied, but the light pink dusting his cheeks gave him away.
"Oh my God! You have to tell me your username!"Brendon said excitedly.
"No way. I've sworn to never go back there again."Ryan said crossing his arms over his chest.
"Ohhh, cooommeeee ooonn, Ryyyrrrooo."Brendon whined making the other boy chukle.
"You're an asshole."he jokingly punched Brendon's arm, trying to contain his laughter.
"The best in town."he answered with a wink.
