If she found out he then he could use her behaviour against her. If she didn't find out then he got to feel better about himself. More than anything he was petrified he'd lose her and somehow, in his own mind, cheating levelled the playing field.
The phone lit up with the details of the tryst. He jumped into his car.
Yes, he thought as he drove, she hurt me. I'll use her behaviour if she tries to hurt me again.
He pulled onto her street and put his phone on silent.
Yeah, he was a cheat, but he was justified.
