I walk along the musty street of Gotham no one took any second glances at anyone. We all kept our heads down as we walked.
Rand(1) and I walked across the road and into a alleyway. I looked behind us to see if anyone followed us in. To our luck no one did and we continued into the alleyway.
At the end of the alley way was a wooden fence with a old door in it. The door had a slot and I knocked on it. The small door slipped open and two eyes revealed themselves.
The look they held was expectantly and skeptical. I pulled a hundred dollar bill out of my pocket and slide it grew the slot and into the eyes.
The glanced down for a moment then back at me before it quickly slide closed. A few seconds later the entire door opened and I stepped in with Rand behind me.
The door guard eyed me then Rand. He tucked the bill into his shirt pocket. I continued in the the small dimly lit shack. In the middle of the room was a wooden ring dug into the ground.
I glare at the men around me as their nasty arms wrapped around even worse women. They all eyed Rand probably wondering if he's worth betting on.
I stood in a spot on the wall and watched as other men brought out there scarred and beaten dogs. They all lined up with their dogs at their sides. Some with muzzles others stood silently and looked void of expression.
I glare at the men before me. I waited for the ring leader to come out and once he did I made my move. I pulled two hand helds from under the back of my shirt and fired at random.
I made sure not to hit the dogs as some of them got loose and attacked their owner or anyone who tried to make a run for it. When the screaming stopped I looked around. Blood spots here and there, a few un-moving bodies layed every few feet, and the ring leader layed dead with a bullet hole threw his scull.
I took a deep breath and began the clean up. I untied tied up dogs and gave them a check over. I made them sit in one spot while I dragged the bodies into the middle of the collapsed ring.
I walked out of the shack and alley way to my van. I pulled into the alley way and pulled out the gasoline. I piled all the dogs into the van and shut the door.
I went back inside and checked the place and bodies for money before I soaked everything in gasoline. I trailed it to the door and took a match then lit the place a blaze.
I watched in go up in flames before I climbed into the van. I dove a few blocks before I came to a stop in another alleyway. I pulled out the cash I stole and checked how much I made bank with. 250 was the total. I looked back and counted how many dogs I got. Five dogs sat in the back of my van all licking their wounds from other fights.
I pulled out of the alley way and into my usual vet. I jumped out only to open the door and climb in. I pulled out spare callers and leashes before I put them on individually.
Rand jumped out first not needing one and lead the pack inside. Dr. David let out an tired sigh when he saw the pack. "Where do you get all these dogs?" he sighed. I smirked but before I could respond he held up his hand.
"Don't answer that it was a rhetorical question. I know where you get them" he groans "the streets" he mocked. I role my eyes as he took the five leashes and I went to pay up front.
I payed 150 in total. Thirty dollars per dog as usual. I sat in a chair and Rand sat in between my legs. He layed his head on my right thigh and I leaned back and the chair with my arms crossed.
It took a while but as I waited a boy came in with a nice looking dane with an all black coat. He looked at me and Rand. The look he held was aloof but the one in his eyes were in awe.
Rand walked over to the dane and my bed him. The dane looked at him before they started to lightly push one another with their bodies. I let out a light laugh as this was Rands way of playing when he was bored or seeking attention.
The dane's owner looked slightly amused himself it wasn't long before Dr.David came back with the dogs all wrapped. The boy looked surprised and glared probably assuming I did this.
Dr.David panicked and looked at me. He gave me a fake glare "You should really stop picking up dogs off the street" he scolded. I rolled my eyes before unleashing the pack.
I whistled for Rand and he came running over taking charge of the pack. "Thanks doc. Its always a pleasure doing business with you." I muse giving him a mock salute before holding the door for the pack then exiting myself.
I drove us home to our home. It was deep in the dark park of Gotham. No one bothers us though. Not even Gotham thugs are stupid enough to invade a building where it's rumored to be crawling with fight dogs. I pulled into the alleyway and opened the door of the van. Rand lead the pack out and I put the key into door. After starting this way of life I had stole enough dirty money to buy out the entire building. Rand lead them in before dismissing them into the building. I watched as they ran off to explore their new home with a smile.
I sigh and rub the back of my neck before trudging up the stares. The entire building entirely consists to twelve floors. Each floor had a purpose, the first floor was the lobby, second floor was the feeding area, the third was bathroom, then the fourth was the play room, and all the rest was the sleeping rooms.
We had a basement but that was reserved for destroying dog rings and interrogations. However the top floor was reserved for Rand and I. That was our private space. When I made the playroom I gutted the entire floor for running space. In the process I thought I'd do the same for my floor. So in reality I'm pretty sure my floor would be considered a flat.
I built most of this myself but I did buy Wayne tech for the purpose of timed feeding and automatic disposal of dog droppings. As I go up the stares and groan when I hear the feeding alarm and all the dogs came running up the stares some of the older ones walked though. I clung to railing as Rand sat at guard. All the dogs ran around Rand there for running around me.
Rand had been leader of the pack sense we started this mess. I don't think I could count the times Rand has gotten into fights with other dogs for the position of leader. I didn't bother to stop it, it was something they did and no matter how hard I could try I wouldn't be able to stop it.
My thought process continued as I made my way up the stares again until I reached my floor. I groaned and kicked off my shoes before walking across the giant floor and into my king size bed. I was proud of myself as I looked out my giant glass window. I had managed to get one and install it myself and not fall twelve floors down onto the conceit.
I soon found myself drifting to sleep with Rand curled in between my open legs. It was just a normal day but damn was I tired.
or so I thought because later I would realize that back at vet that boy would change my life for the better. and not just for Rand and I but for every dog I'd save for the rest of my life.
