In which Karen Wheeler and Jane Hopper meet for the first time.

Now, did the prospect of El meeting Mike's mom scare her? Yes. Yes it did. She was the reason their home was searched by government officials.

Now, the party had planned to meet at Mike's home and from there hike into the woods and have a campfire and roast S'mores.

El just so happened to be the first one to show, and Mike had already explained to her what to do if his parents saw her, and thought her to be the supposedly russian girl Brenner and his associates had shown them.

A familiar face, the one that of Nancy Wheeler appeared at the door, smiling at her warmly.

"Hi E- Jane." she caught herself, with the name El had to go by in public, but had so much distaste for.

To be honest, El didn't think of Jane as a bad name, it just made her angry.

It hurt El to think of the fact that her name would've been Jane so much sooner and not a number, but she moved past that.

She was El now. She'd just have to be Jane in front of others. She could handle that.

"Hi, Nancy." she said kindly. Nancy motioned for her to come inside, and she yelled for Mike, who ran halfway down the stairs, and smiled at El.

"Uh, I'm just finishing packing up the snacks because you know Dustin." he said, laughing a bit.

"I'll be back in a few minutes." he said, smiling widely before running back up the stairs.

A face came around the corner, of a short little girl.

She had blonde hair thrown up in braided pigtails and her eyes lit up when she saw a girl Mike's age in the house.

You see, Holly had friends her age, and Nancy. They played games but Nancy was getting too old for princesses.

"Mommy! There's a pretty girl in the house!" the girl exclaimed.

"Holly, that isn't how we greet guests, now come here, introduce yourself!" Nancy laughed.

The girl trotted over, and El knelt down, to be at eye level.

"I'm Holly!" she exclaimed, holding out her dainty small hand for El to shake.

"I'm Jane." she smiled at the girl filled with energy.

"Nancy, who's this?" a brown haired woman who seemed older and more 'proper' wheeled around on her heels as she made her way from the kitchen.

"I'm Jane. Jane Hopper." El said trying not to stutter over words, she never really spoke much, actions spoke louder than words.

"How do you know Nancy, Jane?" Karen asked kindly.

"I-" what on Earth was she supposed to say?

"She's Mike's girlfriend." Nancy blurted out, and El turned redder than Max's hair.

"I- what? Mike has a girlfriend? MICHAEL!"

In perfect timing, Mike had his backpack on and was going down the stairs.

"Yeah?"

"You didn't tell me you had a girlfriend."

Mike looked to El, who gave him a 'deer in the headlights' look. She didn't know any better than him.

But the tall girl behind her was giggling, and that spoke volumes.

But, Mike thought not to let Nancy get a rise out of them.

"Yeah, uh, just never came up in conversation." he said plainly.

"Well, I feel like I would know if my son was dating such a pretty girl. Please do come around here more often, Jane!" she walked over, and got quiet.

"I think Holly would love to have you over to bake some cookies one day." she smiled sweetly, and El felt as though her heart would burst.

"Alright you two, have fun."

Their friends were all outside, waiting.

"Thanks mom. Bye." Mike said, walking out as El followed.

El busted into tears as the door clicked shut.

"El, what's wrong?"

"I-"

"She's so nice." El said quietly.

"Not many people have treated me that way." she said even quieter, and Mike wrapped her in a hug.

So of course, obviously, El showed up for baking, and Karen was so happy.

But Holly was ecstatic.

Mike didn't know she was there, she wanted to spend a day getting to know Holly.

Holly practically jumped on El when she told her she'd be spending the day there, Holly bounced up and down at the news and the baking went off without a hitch.

So, four out of the five Wheeler's, she liked.

One, she despised.

Ted Wheeler.

When she first came to the home, Ted was the only adult home, and he recognised her.

He called her a russian commie. A spy, evil, awful.

He basically called her the monster.

You know? The thing Mike specifically told her she wasn't? Yeah, that.

But no matter. El was happy right now, because the Wheeler's on a larger scale were in fact, great people.
