Chapter Six

I stared, gapping at Dante; he had to be joking, but the pained look in his eyes spoke more than words, he was telling the truth. I had no idea what I should say, so instead I said "And your dad?"

He sighed staring down at a whirling, black mark in the wood of the table, "Don't know, she never told anyone who he was."

That must suck, growing up pretty much an orphan, it made me feel all the more lucky to have had my mother and father there for me as I grew up. I knew this topic wasn't one he wished to continue with, and nor did I, but I had to know, "So how were you created, how were you born true blood?"

His head slowly rose from the black mark, and looked up into my eyes, the pain there was clearly visible, "She was human when she fell pregnant with me, and when she was bitten I was the one turned instead of her, so even as a baby I was a monster, a monster that killed my mother. You see most of the time the change will kill the unborn child, but very rarely a true blood is created, a vampire with a soul."

A vampire with a soul, that's not possible, is it? No it can't be, vampires are pure evil. Once they are turned, their soul is sucked from them, and down into Hell. Roxy cut into my inner argument, "Yes but your grandfather was born without a soul, and angels are pure goodness, but yet he became the devil, the evilest son of a bitch to walk the earth."

That caused a frown to appear between my brows, because it was true, if an angel could be born without a soul, who's to say a vampire can't be born with one? My head was spinning, and I had no idea if what he said was true, but I had to know. The funniest thing was, I didn't even know why it was I cared; I just did. Mentally shaking my head, I saw out of the corner of my eye, the waiter, Jane, heading towards our table once more with that bright cherry smile of hers, "Hey guys have you decided what you would like yet."

The other guys threw their orders at her, Guss keeping eye contact with her longer then needed, which caused a light blush to take hold of her cheeks. Dante stayed silent and stared at me with blazing golden brown eyes. I dragged my own eyes away from his and looked up at Jane, "I'll have a medium rare steak, with a side of wedges and sour cream, thanks."

She nodded then turned to Dante with that smile of hers still in place, he didn't bother with looking up and just mumbled, "Rare steak with a side of chips and tomato sauce."

She nodded, her smile faltering, and turned away, heading towards a swinging wooden door, one of the ones you see in the old western movies; with our orders. Guss turned to Dante with a pissed look on his face, "Gezz, you didn't need to be such a jerk."

Dante shrugged, pulling at the fabric of his tight, black shirt, his eyes still pinned to me, as if expecting me to say something. Finally he said "What, you’re not going to argue over the fact I have a soul?"

Copying his response to Guss, I shrugged my shoulders, and kept quiet. I had to force myself not to laugh at the annoyance that flashed through his eyes, I enjoyed pissing people off, no matter who it was, my father, brother, friends, Lex, strangers, and random vampires who I meet in dark alley's sucking people dry.

"I mean you argued over the fact that I was True blood. Yeah? So why wouldn't you argue over me having a soul", he said all this with pain edging his words and I mentally winced.

"There is no point me arguing over something that I have no idea about, you may or may not have a soul, so I didn't say a thing." I didn't add in that I didn't like seeing the pain in his eyes, and that I had an urge to wrap my arms around him till all his worries were gone. No, I wasn't going to say that, not in a million years, I didn't even like admitting it to myself.
