Chapter Fourteen

~Jessie~

Mishka bounded ahead of Dante and me as soon as she caught sight of the Pancake House, excitement radiating off her. It was a good thing Dante lived in the clubbing part of town, because all the restaurants around here stayed open well into the night, knowing that drunk (and stoned) people liked food. Though we did get some odd looks from people, probably wondering why we had a little girl with us in an area like this. We ignored them though and followed the excited Mishka into the restaurant. The place was set up like an old fashion diner/ milk bar and was cosy and warm just looking at it. We followed Mishka to a table, and I sat opposite her while Dante sat beside her. In the back of my mind I had been hoping that he’d sit next to me so that I could feel his skin against mine, but the smart side of my brain new it was for the best that he sat on the other side of the table.

We all grabbed a menu, looking over the choices we had and then when the waitress got to the table to take our order we shot at her the food we wanted to fill our stomachs. Mishka ordered blue berry pancakes with ice cream and syrup as well as a strawberry smoothie. Dante ordered chocolate chip pancakes with ice cream and a mint smoothie while I ordered chocolate filled waffles with ice cream, caramel sauce and a caramel latté. The waiter jotted down our order as well as our table number then moved off, leaving us to talk amongst ourselves. Dante frowned at the menu after the waiter had moved away and said, “What I don’t understand is why they don’t have a blood smoothie option.”

I groaned and let my head hit the table while Mishka giggled at her brother and said, “I don’t think they get vampires in very often.”

I looked up and raised a brow at Dante, “Don’t you think you’ve had your fill of blood tonight?”

Dante thought it over for a second before shaking his head, “Nah, you can never have enough blood.”

I went to roll my eyes at him when something in the window caught my attention, Shade; Lex’s second in command was standing across the street, looking in at the restaurant. I avoided focusing my gaze on him and instead watched him from my field vision. He was just leaning against a wall, casually glancing up every now and again to see what I was doing and then would go back to doing something on his phone. I kept watch of him, knowing that he must be keeping tabs on me for Lex, which meant I wasn’t in any immediate danger since Shade wasn’t stupid enough to try and go against me. I was trying to decide if I should mention the demon to Dante when the waiter turned up with our food and drinks.

Mishka’s eyes were wide as her pancakes were placed in front of her, and I had so smile. Dante didn’t wait a second before digging into his food and when Mishka and I looked at him with raised brows he looked between us and said, “What? Draining another vampire is hungry work, leave me alone.”

I snorted and began eating my food, which tasted so good that if I was a dog I would have been salivating. I almost wanted to cry when my plate was clean, hoping that suddenly the waffles would be back there again. When Mishka and Dante finished they pushed their plates to the middle of the table and Dante said, “The best thing about eating out is, I don’t have to clean up.”

I couldn’t help it, I smirked at him and said, “And you don’t need to take a shower in dish water.”

That earned me a sideways glare, but otherwise he ignored me and grabbed his drink, slurping up the last bit of mint smoothie. I did the same with my latte and placed the glass on top of my empty plate while I waited for the waiter to come back so that I could pay him. When the waiter go their though, Dante pulled his wallet out and swiped his card, paying for the meal. After the waiter left with our dirty dishes I raised a brow at Dante and asked, “What happened to being poor and not having money for dinner huh?”
