if harry had expected one thing from this getaway, it wouldn't have been that he'd be more in love with louis than he was when they left. actually, he felt so strongly towards his boyfriend that he needed to have a day off. a day to process and relax. louis expressed a similar interest, so here they were. apart for the first time all holiday.
"it is a bit rank that we're skipping school," liam chuckled as he and harry padded along the vast treeline at a park they'd found.
"yeah," he agreed, "and this probably looks a lot like a date, liam."
the older one grinned, pretending to yell to the heavens, "don't worry, lou! i won't steal him from you!"
harry giggled and pulled his friend onto a nice patch of grass, before sitting down.
"so louis, zayn and niall are off somewhere being a little dream team," the curly haired one mused, "and we're sitting on the floor in this random park."
liam nodded, "to be fair, we are one hundred percent calmer than niall, and anyone who's around him kind of gets caught up in all of that craziness."
"true. i just hope they're having a good time."
"oh harry," liam laughed, "you're too precious."
"what do you mean?"
"think about yourself for once, mate," he explained, "it wouldn't hurt."
"okay."
"so," the older one said strongly, "what do you want to do?"
harry thought for a moment, "is a picnic too 'datey'?"
"doesn't have to be!" liam jumped up quickly, "bro picnic for the win."
"you did not honestly just say that," harry mumbled, voice gracing a laugh.
"i did, styles, and i don't take it back."
-
an hour later, harry and liam had collected enough food for the two of them, louis, niall and zayn, plus the entirety of another country. the boys were so very excited for their makeshift picnic that, when their eating commenced, harry forgot how to feast civilly. he thrust food into his mouth at an impressive pace, liam laughing at his obliviousness.
"isn't a race, lad," he said with a chuckle.
harry looked up red-faced, clearly embarrassed, "sorry. just tastes so good."
"true," the older one stuffed a raspberry bun in his mouth.
then suddenly, harry giggled. liam looked up with one eyebrow raised, "wh-"
he was hit in the face with a banana. harry threw his entire body back, onto the ground, erupting in an outrageous laugh. liam grimaced at the slimy fruit slipping down his cheek but was quick to retaliate. he took hold of his bun and launched it right at harry, the cream hitting him square on the nose.
"oh, you are in for it!" harry yelled.
what was supposed to be an innocent banana to the face turned into a full-blown food fight. there were sandwiches all over the grass, fruits littering their blanket, and jam coating inches and inches of the boys' bodies. both couldn't contain their laughter and were strewn across the floor, long limbs flailing in amusement.
"that was brilliant," the curly lad giggled, "bet the others are jealous of our fun."
"they will be- wow."
"i'm tired though," harry mumbled, suddenly wishing louis was with him to cuddle.
"same," liam agreed, sensing harry's apparent change in mood, "you okay?"
"yeah."
"really?"
"yes, liam. stop worrying."
-
"lou!" harry exclaimed when the boys arrived at their hotel room. he'd missed his boyfriend so dearly, it almost felt as it he couldn't spend any time away from him.
niall scoffed, "where's mine and zaynie's excited screams?"
"sorry ni," he pet his friend on the head, "louis' just more interesting than you."
"i hate being single."
"welcome back, baby, why are you covered in... what looks like... apple sauce?"
"liam and i had a food fight!" he smiled brightly, his whole face lit up.
louis beamed back, "was it fun?"
"yes. missed you a lot though."
"even just for a few hours?"
harry nodded sadly, looking towards his feet, "i don't know why, but i feel like i can't spend any time without you."
the older one cocked his head, "really?"
"unfortunately. you probably think i'm annoying, don't you?"
louis stopped in his tracks and shook his head at harry, "how about we take this upstairs- it's a bit too serious of a conversation to be having in a hotel doorway."
"okay."
harry followed louis up the stairs as a ship would trail a compass. there was a tense air between them that neither liked but couldn't seem to cut. they made it to their bedroom, which was sectioned off from the rest of the unit, and sat together on the bed.
"i don't think you're annoying, harry," louis sighed, "and i don't think that it's weird that you want to see me all the time. we've had big bust-ups in the past and, honestly, it's probably healthy that you feel that way."
harry nodded slowly, "but i just don't want to be too clingy. i feel bad when i am, but then again, i feel bad when i'm not, y'know? like i'm rejecting you."
louis smiled, "we will need space, haz, but it doesn't have to be that long."
"i know we need space i just don't know how to handle it."
his heart broke at that. hearing harry be so broken and honest hurt him, all louis wanted to do was keep him safe forever.
"we'll work it out, yeah?" harry nodded, "good. we work everything out."
"we do," he shyly smiled, although it didn't spread to his eyes. louis pulled the boy into his side and rested his own head on harry's shoulder.
"what do you wanna do now?"
"cuddle," harry said, now grinning properly.
"you're such a baby," louis struggled to fight away tears because of his intense fondness.
"'m your baby."
he pushed harry onto their bed before wrapping his arms around his waist and breathing in the coconutty scent of his long curls, "you are my baby."
"is that why i'm always the little spoon?" he asked.
"no," louis nuzzled his face into the crook of harry's neck, "that's because you love being the little spoon."
"i do. do you think we'll ever swap?"
he snorted, "would you want to?" it was such a stupid conversation to be having and it made louis chuckle. moments like these really confirmed just why he loved his boy.
"probably not."
