Minho

It all happens in slow motion, my eyes on the open space below the berg, Sandy falling into the crumbling building below.

My voice tears out of my throat as I shout her name, my heart breaking into a million pieces.

I want to jump. I need to get to her. I need to save her, but I can't seem to move. My whole body is frozen, paralyzed by fear and heartbreak.

First Winston, then Newt, and now Sandy. Too many deaths have happened this year. Not to mention all the guys left behind in the Maze.

Maybe Gally was right... The Maze was safer than out here.

The door to the berg slams closed in front of me, Vince backing up into the cargo space as his hand claps my shoulder, my tear filled eyes going to his. He softly nods before walking deeper into the berg.

I'm guessing it's his way of giving condolence. The old man doesn't seem to be the comforting type.

My eyes move down to Brenda and Teresa as they try to keep Thomas alive. There's blood pouring from a bullet wound in Thomas' stomach. My stomach twists at the sight...

This is all wrong. This shouldn't be happening. This isn't fair.

This is not what being rescued from WICKED and taking them down was supposed to be like.

I shake my head, tears pouring down my cheeks as I squeeze my eyes shut, sliding slide down a wall deeper inside the berg.

Sandy's smile keeps flowing through my memories–the way it made me feel so alive and warm. Man I already miss it...

She's gone and it's all my fault. I could have stopped her from going into that stupid building. I should've stopped her from even going back to find Thomas and Teresa. But I didn't. And now the worst thing in the world has happened.

She was my everything. And I didn't save her.

"Don't blame yourself, kid," Vince says, snapping me from my daze.

My eyes move to his as my eyebrows furrow. "How'd yo–" I start to ask but Vince interrupts me.

"When Mary died, I did nothing but blame myself." He lets out a sigh. "Trust me, there was nothing I could've done to save her. You can't let yourself think it's your fault." With that, the grey-haired man leaves and goes to the cock-pit with Jorge.

My eyes close as I rest my head on my arms, trying to force today's events out of my mind.

~ two years later ~

It's been two years since those shuckfaces left us. Boy, do I miss them like crazy. Every day has been a challenge without Newt. He was the glue that held us all together. I remember when I found him in the Maze I told him I would protect him, and that's the opposite of what I did.

I still feel like it is all my fault. Gally, Thomas, and Frypan tell me otherwise, but I can't help but feel guilty. I know they are looking out for me, but it's hard.

And every time I think of my sunshine Sandy it just feels like there's a hole in my heart and only she could fill it up. I miss her with everything in me.

I miss the way her eyes lit up every time she looked in my direction, the warmth that would flow through me at just the thought of her or the mention of her name. It still does even after all this time. She made my life 100 times better.

She was the only person who could match my sarcastic mouth, shockingly, and she knew how to put me in my place.

I miss her so much.
