Sunday morning. I was seventeen. Staring into the bathroom mirror I didn't feel different at all, the small crescent moon had developed on my right hip. I pull on my t-shirt and grab my cell phone before heading downstairs.
Cam sits at the table with my sister and everyone else. As my Beta he was to come with me. The whole room is quiet with worry as I take it all in.
"Liam...do you have to?" Veronica asks.
I nod, "Yes Ronnie."
She bites her lip, "But if you get hurt...you won't be able to come with us."
"I won't get hurt."
"How do you know?" she asks.
"Because I'm not going to lose."
When I walk into my parents home I head for their offices. It really was my parents home now. I was seventeen, and for the next five years the packhouse would be my home.
I find my mom sitting in my dads lap, laughing lightly about something.
"Liam? Shouldn't you be getting ready to leave?"
I press my lips together and glance at Cam who nods, "I'm here to stake my claim as Alpha."
My mother looks completely surprised, my dad however does not, "I know you don't exactly have a choice in this son."
I nod and gulp, "I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't have to. I have to protect Skylar."
He nods grimly, "I'll get the elders. Meet at the clearing with your pack."
Twenty minutes later I'm pacing back and forth in wolf form. My pack stands back as the elders come in. My grandpa shakes his head at me, Liam this could be a grave mistake.
I'm protecting my True Mate gramps. I don't have a choice.
He watches as my father, as big as I, walks into the clearing. My dad bows at my grandpa. Something seems to pass between them as they stare at each other for several long minutes. Finally my grandpa says, I'd like to speak to Liam alone son.
My father nods and stands back, staring at me with his wolf blue eyes.
My grandpa's steady brown gaze stares down at me, You are a powerful wolf Liam. I'm going to tell you what my grandfather told me, and what my father told your father, and what your father will one day tell your son. In a perfect world we wouldn't have to stand alone. And normally as wolves we have our pack behind us. But when it comes down to the fight for your title, you do stand on your own. Normally the strength of your mating bond would encourage you. Right now, you don't have that privelge. You're facing your father now Liam, but you'll get through this. And now to what we've all been told, you're going to be a great Alpha.
He bows in front of me, and the elders proceed to follow. Right up to my parents. My gives me a wolfish grin and then steps forward with one paw, bowing to his defeat.
Dad!
He stands uprigtht, I can't fight my son when I know he's trying to save my future Femme Alpha wolf. Now go get her, and bring back Madeline and Carmen.
I feel the shift in the air. The sense of power shifting in my bones. Tonight it would be my duty to bring Jay forward as my Beta. I look at my pack and they grin back at me, we were all only seventeen, sixteen, and fifteen and we had the control.
I look at the younger wolves, Go home. This isn't your fight. You don't need to be in the danger zone. I won't risk your lives that way.
They nod and follow the departing elders. As I look at my pack, no my friends, I realize how much trouble we're in. We all had something to lose. Family, a friend, a lover. We were all at risk for getting hurt if even one person died.
Listen to me guys, no one is to kill Alpha Black and no one is to kill Rain. Is that understood?
They all nod slowly and I lower my head, dragging my right paw against the ground.
Then let's go.
Vote. Comment. Fan.
xoxo, Sara
